Index: M : Morissette, Alanis

Special Sub-Topic: Alanis Lyrics

When describing her relationship with this person, Alanis says "With you I suffered a(n)___"

Expansion. From "Simple Together", a song off of "Feast on Scraps" where she describes a break up and her disappointment that it did not work out as she had anticipated.

"Must be strangely exciting to watch the _____". What alliterative phrase follows?
Stoic squirm. I love how she incorporates so much philosophy into her songs. From "Uninvited" off of the "City of Angels" movie soundtrack.

"Well what about the man that I saw ____in the emergency room bleeding after beating his kid and she threw a shoe at his head and I think what he did was wrong." What word describes the person in the emergency room?
handcuffed. This line actually comes before the one that I find interesting - the idea that we can't always express our opinions and have to censor ourselves in case others feel judged. The segment goes like this: "'well what about the man that I saw handcuffed in the emergency room bleeding after beating his kid and she threw a shoe at his head. I think what he did was wrong and I would've had a hard time feeling compassion for him.' I had to watch my tone for fear of having you feel judged." From "I Was Hoping"

"I wouldn't have compromised as much so much of _____ for fear of having you hating me". What would Alanis not have compromised?
myself. From "Your Congratulations." A theme in a lot of her songs is comprimising and giving up elements herself for someone else, usually a man.

Fill in the blank: "I wonder which crime is the biggest, forgetting you or forgetting myself, had I heeded the wisdom of the latter, I would have naturally _____ the former."
loved. This is from my all-time favourite, yet sadly underknown song, "Sorry to Myself". It's full of wonderful lines.

"Bringing these into the light shakes their foundation and clears my sight. Now my ______ is/are the only thing that limits the bar and its rise to the heights." What word completes the lyric?
    imagination. From "Excuses".

"You are a ____ who cares for his brothers." What is he?
wordsmith. From "Knees of my Bees". In this song Alanis describes her feelings for her fiance Ryan Reynolds. She is playing with the 1920s expression "bee's knees" and in typical Alanis fashion, reverses the wording.

"I don't want to live on someday when my motto is ____". What word comes next?
last week. From "Not the Doctor", in my opinion the best song on "Jagged Little Pill."

"My generosity has me _____ by this my sense of duty to offer". What has her generosity done to her?
disabled. This is from "Offer" a great song off of "Feast on Scraps." "Feast on Scraps" was released as a recording of accoustic songs. Sadly it was not widely heard, and none of the songs on the album were released as singles so many of the songs are unknown.

"Never too hot never too cold/You make your best ____too hot to hold." Fill in the blank.
shot. I thought I would end with the same song Alanis ended with in her recent accoustic tour. Obviously just a little reminder of life before "Jagged Little Pill."
