    First manned test of the command and service modules. The first manned test of the command and service modules took place on Apollo 7 in October 1968. Since Apollo 9 was the first Apollo mission to have a lunar module, it accomplished a large number of firsts, including the first rendezvous and docking of the command module and the lunar module.

Who was NOT on Apollo 9?
    Tom Stafford. Tom Stafford was the commander of Apollo 10 in May 1969. The Apollo 9 crew was James McDivitt, Commander; David Scott, Command Module Pilot; and Russell Schweickart, Lunar Module Pilot.

Which crewmember became ill during the flight?
    Schweickart. Even with his spacesickness, Schweickart was able to perform 37 minutes of EVA from the lunar module.

Apollo 9 was the first manned mission launched on the Saturn V rocket.
    f. It was the second manned mission launched on a Saturn V. Apollo 8 in December 1968 was the first.

What Apollo mission did the backup crew of Apollo 9 become prime crew for?
    Apollo 12. Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon and Alan Bean were the prime crew for Apollo 12 and backed up Apollo 9. Conrad and Bean walked on the moon in the Ocean of Storms in November 1969.

All Apollo missions prior to Apollo 9 had named their spacecraft.
    f. Apollo 9 was the first Apollo mission in which names for spacecraft were authorized. They chose Gumdrop for the command module and Spider for the lunar module.

    Atlantic Ocean. Splashdown occurred on March 13, 1969 at 12:01 p.m. EST. The recovery ship was the USS Guadalcanal.

Two of the crewmembers flew another Apollo mission after Apollo 9.
    f. Only David Scott flew another mission. He was the commander of Apollo 15, which landed on the moon.
