On the Apollo 9 patch, the 'D' in McDivitt is filled in with red. Why?

    It was a "D" mission. In NASA's scheme of things, this LM/CSM combined evaluation was a "D" mission. The emblem depicts the Saturn V, the command and service module and the lunar module.

Which of the following mission emblems did not say 'Apollo' on it?
    Apollo 7. The disc of the emblem is the earth with a trajectory around it and the command and service module signifying that this was an earth-orbital mission.

    Apollo 16. It depicts an eagle atop a red, white and blue shield in front of a lunar landscape. A symbol of flight is across the front. The mission emblems of Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 also had eagles on them.

Of the following, which mission emblem depicts Apollo, Greek god of the Sun?
    Apollo 17. The Apollo 17 mission emblem shows Apollo and behind him an outline of an eagle just touching the moon, suggesting that man has been there. They are both gazing towards Saturn and a galaxy depicting man's continuing exploration of space.

The ship on the Apollo 12 mission emblem is flying a flag.
    t. The Apollo 12 mission emblem depicts a clipper ship, signifying that the crew was all Navy and relates the era of the clipper ship to that of spaceflight as far as discovery and exploration are concerned. The blue and gold colors also signify Navy colors. And yes, the official emblem has a US flag flying from the top of the ship.

The mission emblem for Apollo 14 depicts their spacecraft.
    f. The Apollo 14 mission emblem depicts an astronaut lapel pin on a trajectory from the earth to the moon. Astronauts were given a silver pin when they became astronauts and a gold version after their first space flight. Since the commander, Alan Shepard, had only had 15 minutes of flight experience, this crew was jokingly called "the all-rookie crew".

Which unmanned mission had its own mission emblem?
    Apollo 5. Apollo 5 was the first test of the LM in space. Designated LM-1, this was the only LM to fly without a crew. The engineers at Grumman who built the LM felt the mission deserved an emblem so they created one. It depicts the firing of the ascent stage engine while the two stages are still mated. It shows the earth below and the moon to the right.

On the Apollo program emblem, three stars form the bar of the 'A'. What do they signify?
    The three stars on the belt of Orion. The constellation of Orion appears on the Apollo program emblem and the belt forms the bar of the 'A'. Also shown are the earth and the moon which has the image of Apollo the sun god on it.
