An easy one to start with: "Friends, _____, countrymen, lend me your ears."

Romans. "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; The good oft is interred with their bones." William Shakespeare, "Julius Caesar," Act 3 scene 2. Paul was, of course, writing to the church in Rome in this book. This letter is the favorite of many Christians; it encourages, comforts, and exhorts.

"In _____, it says that it is not good for man to be alone; but sometimes it is a great relief." - John Barrymore

Genesis. Yes, he's the grandfather of Drew and brother of Ethel and Lionel. He came from a family of performers, was married four times and died from the effects of years of heavy drinking. Barrymore was talking about Gen. 2:18 - 'The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."' It is believed that Genesis was written by Moses, as were the other four of the first five books of the Bible, the Pentateuch.

"No man ever listened himself out of a _____." - Calvin Coolidge

Job. Once President Coolidge was apprehended by a woman who said that she had made a bet with her friend; she had told her friend that she could make the President say three words. President Coolidge replied, "You lose". Incidentally, Job and Coolidge both experienced the loss of their children: Coolidge's youngest son died while he was in office as a result of an injury sustained while playing tennis.

"How dreadful it is when the right _____, _____ wrong!" - Sophocles

Judge, Judges. Sophocles was a Greek playwright. "Oedipus the King" is thought to be his masterpiece; only seven of his works have survived. Some of them are "Electra", "Antigone", and "The Women of Trachis". Judges is a book from the Old Testament; one of the more interesting characters from it is Deborah, a female judge renowned for her wisdom.

n. The correct quote reads: "It is the MARK of an educated man to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." - Aristotle Mark is the second Gospel. The four Gospels portray Jesus in his four different "roles": Matthew exalts him as King, Mark shows him in the role of servant, Luke details his human perfection, and John shows that he is the Messiah, the Everlasting One. Mark was not written by the disciple Mark, but by a cousin of Barnabas named John Mark.

"ACTing is the most minor of gifts and not a very high-class way to earn a living. After all, Shirley Temple could do it at the age of four." Who said this?

Katharine Hepburn. I'm inclined not to agree with Ms. Hepburn on this one - she certainly had a tremendous gift. She was involved in many of the great movies of this century, and some of the most entertaining! Acts is the fifth book of the New Testament, and is almost an extension of the Gospels. It details the "acts" of the new believers after Christ ascended into heaven: mission trips, councils of the new Church, etc. It was written by a physician named Luke.

Kings. First and Second Kings tell of the many rulers of Israel and Judah, as you might have guessed. Very interesting to read about the different monarchs' lives and deeds. It is in the Old Testament. Incidentally, the Bible is first and Shakespeare's works second in terms of number of books written about them.

Peter. This quote is from Shaw's book "Everybody's Political What's What?" First and Second Peter occur near the end of the New Testament. Simon is not a book in the Bible; it was Peter's first name, before he was given the name of Peter (which means "rock") by Jesus.

"Henry James writes fiction as if it were a painful duty." Who said this?

Oscar Wilde. William Faulkner did say, "Henry James was one of the nicest old ladies I ever met", but the other two didn't comment on him publicly to my knowledge. James was written by the half-brother of Jesus.
