Fun Trivia: B : Biochemistry

Special Sub-Topic: Biomolecules I

Which of these is a pentasaccharide sugar?

Verbascose. Pentasaccharides are a type of polysaccharides which contain 5 monosaccharide units. Stachyose is a tetrasaccharide which contains 4 monosaccharide units. Raffinose is a trisaccharide which contains 3 monosaccharide units and threose is monosaccharide by itself. It contains 4 carbon atoms.

Ceruloplasmin is a type of
Metalloprotein. Ceruloplasmin is a type of conjugated protein found in the plasma of blood, which has copper as the non-protein component. It is a metalloprotein as it contains a metallic ion as the prosthetic group. Prosthetic group is nothing but the non-protein component. Phosphoproteins have a phosphate unit as the prosthetic group, lipoproteins have a lipid as the prosthetic group and glycoproteins have a carbohydrate as the prosthetic group.

Waxes are
Esters of monohydric alcohol and a fatty acid. Trihydric alcohols are glycerols. Aldehyde and ketone derivatives of polyhydroxy alcohols are carbohydrates.

An example of a phospholipid is
Lecithin. Phospholipids are a type of lipids which have a phosphate unit in their structures. Lecithin is a phospholipid containing 1 molecule of glycerol, 2 molecules of a fatty acid, 1 molecule of phosphoric acid and choline, a nitrogenous base. Oxytocin is a peptide hormone, Pectin is a heteropolysaccharide found in the cell wall of certain fruits and cortisone is a hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex.

Histone is a type of
Simple protein. Simple proteins are a type of proteins which yield only amino acids upon hydrolysis. Histone is a simple protein soluble in dilute ammonia and water. It gives DNA its supercoiled structure and is an essential component of chromosomes.

Which of these is a transferase enzyme?
Glutamate-pyruvate transaminase. A transpherase enzyme is a type of enzyme which catalyses the reactions in which there is transfer of functional groups between the substrates. Cytochrome oxidase is an oxidase enzyme which catalyses oxidation reactions and ptyalin (salivary amylace) is a hydrolase enzyme which catalyses hydrolytic reactions.

Vitamin A is also called
Retinol. Retinol is essential for vision and growth. Its deficiency causes nyctalopia (night blindness), retardation of growth in children and defective growth of bones and teeth. Tocopherol is another name for Vitamin E, calciferol is another name for Vitamin D and phylloquinone is another name for Vitamin K.

Which vitamin is also called an antisterility vitamin?
Vitamin E. Vitamin E is essential for reproduction and foetal development. Its deficiency leads to defective development of testes and implantation of the embryo.

Which of these is a saturated fatty acid?
Palmitic acid. Saturated fatty acids are long chain, aliphatic, monocarboxylic acids which have no double bonds in their structures. Palmitic acid is a type of saturated fatty acid which is present in palm oil and animal fats. The other three fatty acids are unsaturated which have double bonds in their structures.

Antibodies are also called
Immunoglobulins. Antibodies or immunoglobulins, which defend our body against pathogens, are proteins. Globulin is a simple protein present in these antibodies. Prolamines and albumins are also simple proteins but are not present in antibodies. Nucleotides are monomers of nucleic acids like DNA and RNA.
