Special Sub-Topic: "Cat Who..." Characters


This man has been Qwill's friend since grade school. In "The Cat Who Could Read Backwards" he is the feature editor at the "Daily Fluxion", the big-city newspaper where Qwill goes to work.

    Arch Riker. Qwill and Arch grew up together in Chicago. Arch ends up moving to Moose County after Qwill moves there, and he runs the "Moose County Something", the county newspaper.

Qwill first met this woman in "The Cat Who Saw Red". She was described as "young, plump, loud and has long eyelashes." She also seems to always be looking for a husband, and later moves to Moose County to work as the advertising manager for the "Moose County Something".
    Hixie Rice. Alacoque Wright, or Cokey as Qwill originally called her, is Mrs. Middy's assistant in "The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern" and an architect by training. Rhoda Tibbitt is in her 80's and married to Homer Tibbitt. Susan Exbridge is the ex-wife of Don Exbridge and the owner of Exbridge & Cobb, Fine Antiques.

This man owns a bookstore in Pickax that sells old books and has a hand bindery in the back. In "The Cat Who Knew a Cardinal" he plays Cardinal Campeius.
    Eddington Smith. The name of his bookstore is Edd's Editions, and his great-grandfather founded Smith's Folly, a now-abandoned town in Moose County, in 1856.

Qwill first met this woman in "The Cat Who Turned On and Off", where she and her husband owned a junk shop and rented out a room to Qwill.
    Iris Cobb. Iris later moves north to Moose County to take care of the antiques that Qwill inherits.

This Goodwinter is married to Jody and becomes the managing editor of the "Moose County Something" when it starts production.
    Junior. Jack is Junior's brother, Titus is Junior's grandfather, and Ephraim is Junior's great-grandfather.

This man is the owner of the Black Bear Cafe in the Hotel Booze. He's originally described as having "an unruly head of black hair and a bushy, black beard."
    Gary Pratt. Larry and his wife Carol own Lanspeak Department Store in Pickax. Scott is an overweight, used-car salesman. Chester is the owner of Chet's Bar and Barbeque in Kennebeck.

This woman owns an interior decorating studio, and is described as a "gray-haired woman with a perpetual scowl." She was once engaged to Arch Riker, though they broke up before getting married.
    Amanda Goodwinter. Amanda has also served on the city council and later becomes the mayor of Pickax.

This man is the police chief in Pickax, and he often wears a kilt and plays the bagpipes at funeral and weddings.
    Andy Brodie. Andy often stops by Qwill's home to unofficially discuss a current case and to have a drink and a snack.

This man is the meteorologist at WPKX radio station in Pickax, and goes by the psuedonym of Wetherby Goode on the radio.
    Joe Bunker. Jason is Nick and Lori Bamba's son. Derek is a tall, young man and likes to act in the local theater. Boyd is a local Moose County farmer.

This last one isn't a real person in Moose County, but is the false name that Qwill uses when he wants to remain anonymous.
    Ronald Frobnitz. Jack owns the Sip 'n Nibble shop, a cheese and wine shop, with Jerry Sip. Gustav owns the New Pickax Hotel. Lenny is a local young man who is described as "clean-cut and good with people."
