Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What tank did the Chieftain replace as the MBT of the British Army?

Answer: Centurion

Although under powered the Chieftain was an excellent gun platform, and when used continuously the engine performed well.
2. What size main armament did the Chieftain use?

Answer: 120mm

The 120mm L11A5 rifled tank gun was a very accurate high velocity gun, and in its day could match any known tank.
3. How many links were in a new track?

Answer: 96 links

A very simple track made of mechanised steel, it had rubber track pads for better grip on metalled roads. For the experienced crew there was a very quick way of removing a link due to wear.
4. How many links could be removed due to wear before a new track was fitted?

Answer: 4

The original specification was to re-pin at 92 links then replace at 88 links, this was stopped after it was found that the track was pulling apart and all tracks were replaced at 92 links.
5. What type of main engine was fitted?

Answer: Leyland L60 (diesel)

The original specification was for a 650hp multi fuel engine, this in fact proved to be unworkable and diesel was the only fuel used, the engine was later upgraded to 750hp on the MK V and later Mks.
6. How many road wheels were fitted to the Chieftain?

Answer: 24

The road wheels were of a welded steel construction with a solid rubber tyre.
7. What was the abbreviation for the improved night fighting equipment fitted to the Chieftain?

Answer: TOGS

TOGS proved to be a winner with Chieftain crews and proved itself on the later Challenger tanks in the first Gulf War.
8. What was the weight of the Chieftain?

Answer: 54 tons

Although at 54 tons it was a heavy tank the ground pressure is only 13lbf/in2 or 90Nk2.
9. What type was the co-axial machine gun?

Answer: 7.62mm MG Tk L8A2

Co-axial means it will follow the main gun in elevation and in traverse. The early guns could achieve a rate of fire approaching nearly 1000 rounds a minute, this was found to be too high and the guns were modified to fire at a rate of about 800-850 rpm.
10. Why was the thermal sleeve fitted to the main gun?

Answer: To reduce barrel distortion

Due to the heat generated when firing the main gun the barrel can distort due to wind rain etc causing inaccuracy during firing.
