The population, reflecting a long history on a caravan route from Central Asia, is mostly Uygur (Uighur), with Chinese, Kazakh, and Kyrgyz minorities. Mosques in the city reflect a continuing Islamic influence.

    Chengdu. Chengdu is located on the Min Jiang (a tributary of the upper Yangtze), and is the cultural and industrial center for the agricultural Chengdu Plain. I remember it as a lovely city, a smaller version of Beijing and worth visiting.

    Hebei. Shijiazhuang is a commercial, transportation, and industrial center situated at the northern edge of the Huabei Pingyuan (North China Plain). This city is rather polluted and is best viewed from an aeroplane at 40,000 feet.

    Jiangxi. Nanchang is a regional transportation and industrial center situated near Poyang Lake in the delta of the Gan River. In the past it was known as Hung-chou. It is an old walled city dating to at least the 2nd century BC.

    Wuhan. Wuhan is a major industrial complex and inland port at the confluence of the Han and Yangtze rivers. The port is accessible to oceangoing vessels. The city gets so hot that it is known as one of Chinafs three furnaces. Chongqing and Nanjing are the other two.

    Harbin. Harbin is a port and rail junction on the Songhua River. It is a major commercial, industrial, and transportation center, situated in a productive farming region. The city was founded as a rail center in 1900 by Russian financiers. It was known as Pinkiang while part of the former Japanese-controlled state of Manchukuo (1932- 45)

Fuzhou is the capital of which province/autonomous region?
    Fujian. Fuzhou consists of an old walled city, about 3.2 km from the Min River, and a modern riverside quarter, which is connected by bridge to Nantai Island. A university is in the city, and several noted pagodas and temples are nearby.

What is the capital of Yunnan Province?
    Kunming. Kunming is located on Lake Dian Chi at an altitude of 1890 m, and has a temperate climate often described as 'eternal spring.' The city was founded during the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 BC), but did not become part of China until the 13th century.

Lanzhou is the capital of which province/autonomous region to the west of Beijing?
    Gansu. Lanzhou is a major transportation and industrial center on the Huang He (Yellow River). It is one of China's leading petrochemical and nuclear power centers.

What is the capital of Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region?
    Lhasa. The city is situated near the Lhasa He (a tributary of the Brahmaputra River) in a fertile plain almost 3660 m above sea level. It is surrounded by lofty, barren mountains.

Changchun is the capital of which province?
    Jilin. Changchun is a spacious, modern city, with broad avenues. The city was founded by Chinese settlers in the 1790s. As Hsinking, it served (1932- 1945) as the capital of the former Japanese-controlled state of Manchukuo.

What is the capital of Qinghai Province?
    Xining. Xining (Sining), is the only large city in Qinghai Province. Chinese constitute only about one-third of the population; Mongols, Tibetans, Hui (Chinese Muslims), and Kazaks are the largest ethnic minorities.
