Alex's mother died of lung cancer a year after his father died. He was sent to live in Washington DC, with his grandmother, Nana Mama, with whom he and his children still reside.

Cross had tried to set up a private practice in Washington DC, but gave up after limited success for three years. He joined the Washington DC Police Department, then became a member of the FBI.
