Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the scientific name (genus species)for the American Alligator?

Answer: Alligator mississipiensis

The American Alligator can be found flourishing in marsh areas throughout Florida. Although most people fear these large reptiles, they are not natural predators of humans and therefore generally do not bother us.
2. How many species of venomous snakes live in Florida?

Answer: 6

Six species of venomous snakes live in Florida: the southern copperhead, the cottonmouth (aka water moccasin), the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the timber rattlesnake, the dusky pygmy rattlesnake, and the eastern coral snake.
3. Which of these is NOT a reason for conserving wetlands?

Answer: They are home to many species of tropical fish.

At one point in time, almost all of Florida was covered in marshes and wetlands. Today, due to the increase in homes being built in Florida, the number of wetlands has been reduced drastically.
4. Only one type of tortoise lives in Florida. Name it.

Answer: gopher tortoise

The burrows of gopher tortoises have been known to measure 40 feet in length and 10 feet in depth. These burrows are often shared with other animals. 360 known species of animals in Florida have shared homes with these tortoises.
5. What are the two strongest senses of a Florida Panther?

Answer: Sight and Smell

These two senses are what make the panther such an excellent hunter. One thing you will never see in Florida is a black panther--this is because they do not actually exist. The animals that are often mistaken for 'black panthers' are actually melanistic (black) jaguars or leopards, neither of which are even found in Florida to begin with.
6. The Everglades in South Florida is the only place in the world where these two animals can be found living together. Which are they?

Answer: Alligators and Crocodiles

There are millions of alligators in Florida, but very few American crocodiles. Many hunters cannot tell the difference between the two, so alligator hunting is strictly regulated in order to help protect the crocodiles. One may only hunt alligators at specified times of the year, with a certified guide.
7. What is the lifespan of a whitetail deer?

Answer: 19-23 years

The whitetail deer is found in deciduous forests swamps, and open brush areas. They can be found in wooded areas throughout Florida, as well as most of southern Canada, all of mainland U.S.,and throughout Central American to Bolivia.
8. What is a male duck called?

Answer: a drake

Several species of duck can be found in Florida, including the mallard duck, which can fly up to 55 miles-per-hour.
9. Why do a Roseate Spoonbill's feathers have a pinkish tint to them?

Answer: They eat a diet high in carotene

The pinkish color comes from the carotene they get from the foods they eat. Carotene is found in large quantities in algae and filter feeders such as shrimp and crabs.
10. Which of the following is true about the size of the Bald Eagle?

Answer: The female is larger.

Bald Eagles pair for life and build nests in tall pine or cypress trees. The Bald Eagle became the national symbol of the United States in 1782 and is protected by Federal law.
