Special Sub-Topic: Golden Globes - Then and Now
|In 2005, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association boasted well over 80 members who voted for the Golden Globe Awards in 24 major categories.
Just eight foreign journalists founded the awards in October 1943. They were presented at a luncheon at Fox Studios and there were only five categories. In 1944 the awards were held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. What indication was there that funds were extremely tight for these fledgling awards? |
Actress Joan Bennett's gardener was asked to supply the flowers.. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was originally formed by foreign journalists in the USA, who were covering the entertainment industry during World War II. By combining resources, they were able to help each other get reports through to their respective countries. The need for this continued co-operation was recognised in the formation of the Association in 1943.
Only five categories were considered in the first year. They were Best Motion Picture, Best Actor and Actress, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress.
