    a ship. It was named after the ship in which Charles Darwin sailed. It was on the HMS Beagle that he sailed to Tierra del Fuego. On his return he began writing 'On the Origin of the Species'.

    Blur. Blur produced an original track called 'No Distance Left To Run' for the Beagle 2 mission.

On which day was the first signal expected?
    Christmas Day. It was scheduled to transmit its first signal at 2.45 am on Christmas Day 2003. The signal was to be a short burst of the music specially composed by the group Blur. No signal was received.

Which artist was involved with the project?
    Damien Hirst. Instead of a normal colour chart Beagle 2 carried a spot painting by the controversial artist Damien Hirst. The spots of various colours were painted on a gold base.
