Special Sub-Topic: I'm Bleedin' Quadrophenic!
What inspired Pete Townshend to begin writing "Quadrophenia"?
A newspaper article about a young mod who killed himself. It is uncertain in the movie whether Jimmy lives or dies at the end, but Pete Townshend originally planned the story to tell how a young man can be driven to such a rash and desperate act as suicide.
Who is Ferdy?
A drug dealer. Ferdy keeps the boys supplied with their pills, keeping bags of them in his hat. Jimmy usually requests blues. The mod movement was big on amphetamines.
When the camera pans around to Jimmy lying on his bed, who does he have a picture of hanging by his head?
Pete Townshend. Part of the reason Phil Daniels was cast as the lead was because he somewhat resembled a young Pete Townshend, skinny with dark hair and pale skin. Pete was always very thin and had a large nose.
What kind of sandwich does Dave want?
Egg. Dave is Jimmy's friend who later ends up with Steph, in a saddening turn of events. When he takes a large bite out of his egg sandwich, something comes oozing out of the bottom, prompting a disgusted response from Jimmy.
Why are Jimmy's pants wet?
Because he has to shrink them while they're on him so they fit right. Jimmy's father is stunned to find him wearing sopping wet Levi's, while his mother just warns him not to drip all over her carpets.
How does Steph describe the trip to Brighton?
"It was a giggle". Jimmy is outraged that Steph seems to feel so little about their relationship. While in Brighton, he felt like everything was wonderful, while she saw it as just getting kicks.
What does Dave say that makes Jimmy furious?
"She says you're good at going up and down in alleyways.". This comment is preceeded by Dave talking about how he can get Jimmy a new job as a garbage collector. Jimmy physically attacks Dave after this nasty little remark.
What does Jimmy do after leaving the posh party?
Rides his scooter all over the flowerbeds. When you see the parents coming home in the next scene, the mother can be heard saying, "Look at my flowers!"
Who plays the Ace Face?
Sting. This was one of Sting's first roles, before the Police were famous. However, while the movie was in production the band began to make it, and by the time of the premiere there were hundreds of screaming fans waiting to see Sting.
What line from "Helpless Dancer" is played in the final shot, when we see the smashed bike?
"You stop dancing". This is the only segment of the song that appears in the entire movie. Many of the songs were shortened, and several did not appear at all, but unlike "Tommy," this film used the music from the original album, which sounds much better in my opinion.
