Special Sub-Topic: James Potter

When was James Potter born?

27th March, 1960. James was born to older parents, and was their only child. They spoiled him as a child which is probably why he was a bit of a show off when he first went to Hogwarts. His date of birth is on his gravestone in Godric's Hollow, as revealed in "The Deathly Hallows".

James Potter met his best friend on the Hogwarts Express in his first year. What was his name?
Sirius Black. James and Sirius became immediate friends on the train in the same way that Harry and Ron did many years later. His other two friends were Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. In "Order of the Phoenix", Sirius tells Harry that he moved in with James and his parents when he ran away from home, aged 16.

What name did James Potter and his three friends give to their gang?
The Marauders. James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew composed the Marauder's Map, which Harry was given by Fred and George, the Weasley twins, in his third year at Hogwarts, in the "Prisoner of Azkaban". It was signed by Messrs. Moony (Remus), Wormtail (Peter), Padfoot (Sirius) and Prongs (James).

Who called James Potter "An arrogant toerag"?
Lily Evans. As with all great love stories, James Potter and Lily Evans did not like each other when they first met. Lily was friends with Severus Snape and did not like the way that James kept picking on him. This was revealed in "The Order of the Phoenix" as part of Snape's memories.

James Potter was Head Boy at Hogwarts, but NOT a Prefect.
    t. James Potter was a clever and able student, but when he first started at Hogwarts, he was more interested in showing off. He gradually started working harder so that in his final year, he was made Head Boy. In "The Philosopher's Stone", it is revealed that James Potter was Head Boy, but in "The Order of the Phoenix", we learned that he was not a prefect.

Did James Potter play Quidditch?
    y. James Potter played as a Chaser and became Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Many years later, his son Harry was appointed Captain too, but he played Seeker. In the film of "The Philosopher's Stone", it is said that James had been a Seeker, but J.K. Rowling stated in an interview that James had been a Chaser.

Why did Lily Evans say that James Potter always looked like he had just got off of a broomstick?
He kept ruffling his hair. Like his son Harry, James had hair that stuck up. Harry kept trying to smooth his hair down to hide his scar, but James did the opposite because he thought that it looked good. This was revealed in "Order of the Phoenix" as part of Snape's memories.

James Potter's Patronus was a stag, the same as Harry's.
    t. James Potter was an Animagus and transformed himself into a stag. His Patronus took his animal form. Professor Minerva McGonagall had a cat Patronus, the same as her animal form. This is suggested in "The Prisoner of Azkaban" and confirmed in a J.K. Rowling live interview.

What was the only thing, other than money, that James passed on to his son Harry?
Invisibility Cloak. Harry got the cloak on Christmas Day during his first year at Hogwarts. Dumbledore told Harry that the cloak had been lent to him by James towards the end of "The Philosopher's Stone". The origin of the cloak is rather mysterious. Ignotus Peverell was an ancestor of James and the youngest brother in the children's story, "The Tale Of Three Brothers". This was revealed in "The Deathly Hallows".

When did James Potter die?
31st October, 1981. James and Lily Potter were only twenty-one when they died. They gave their lives trying to protect their son. James' date of death is on his gravestone in Godric's Hollow as revealed in "The Deathly Hallows". It is a date that is well known throughout the Wizarding world due to the unexpected defeat of Voldemort.
