    Madrid.

Juan Gris was not his real {name;} what was he born as?
    Jose Perez. His full birth name was Jose Victoriano Carmelo Carlos Gonzalez Perez. There's a mouthful!

Where did Gris study at?
    School of Arts and Industries in Madrid. Contrary to popular belief, Juan Gris did not study engineering and was never an engineer. He graduated from the School of Arts and Industries in 1902.

In 1904 or 1905, Gris studied under a master painter. Who was it?
    Jose Moreno Carbonero. Carbonero was from Malaga. Picasso and Dali both learned from him over the years.

Why did the artist change his name to Juan Gris?
    no one knows. His new name was definitely not inspired by the colors he used, for they were bright and powerful.

In 1906, Gris grew impatient with the art world that he was currently living in. He sold everything he had and left that place, almost penniless. Where did he go?
    Paris. Gris had grown impatient with the art world in Spain. His move also kept him out of obligatory military service. This branded him a fugitive and prevented him from ever returning to Spain.

What art dealer represented Gris's works for the majority of the artist's career?
    Kahnweiler. Gris met Pablo Picasso within a year of his arrival in Paris and in fact worked in a studio in the same building as Picasso. Picasso didn't like Gris for some reason, but he did do him one favor: he told the art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler about him. Kahnweiler was to represent Gris's works for the rest of his art career.

What art movement is Gris most associated with?
    Cubism.

Gris had an illegitimate {son;} who was the mother of his child?
    Belin. Belin disappeared as soon as her and Gris's son was born. Gris was a struggling artist at the time and he did not feel that he could care for the child, so he sent Jorge to Spain to live with his family.

What year did Gris paint Portrait of Picasso?
    1912. Gris painted the work as a homage to the man he considered his teacher and friend, even though Picasso was neither.

Gris was plagued by a recurrent disease and he had to undergo a painful surgery because of it. What disease did he have?
    asthma.
