Special Sub-Topic: Lesser Known Characters of Mythology


This man was a known woman hater of Cyprus. He lived for his art and literally fell in love with one of his pieces.

    Pygmalion. Pygmalion made a statue of a woman and fell in love with it. He prayed to Aphrodite to bring her to life.

This couple was rewarded by Zeus and Hermes for the great hospitality they showed in the wicked city of Phrygia. They welcomed the gods, dressed as beggers, into their home.
    Baucis and Philemon. While the rest of the city was turned into a swamp, the gods turned Baucis and Philemon's home into a temple.

She was one of the Nereids. Zeus desired her, but she rejected his advances. The goddess Themis then revealed that that this woman was fated to bear a son who was mightier than his father; fearing for his dominion, Zeus gave her as bride to a mortal, Peleus, with whom she had a son who grew to be a great Greek warrior in the Trojan War.
    Thetis. Thetis was the mother of Achilles. She was the one who dipped him into the Styx river.

She was half nymph and half serpent. She was the mother of Cerberus, Hydra, and other mythologic creatures.
    Echidna. Echidna was also the mother of Chimera and Sphinx.

He defeated his brothers in a running contest and was rewarded with the rulership over Ellis. He also played a major role in ending the Trojan War with his famous "horse."
    Epeus. Epeus constructed the Trojan Horse.

He was one of the Centaurs known for his goodness and wisdom instead of violence. He trained many young heroes, and one accidentally killed him with an arrow.
    Chiron. Chiron was accidentally shot by his pupil, Achilles.

She was carried off by Idas, a hero of the Calydonian Hunt, to be married. Apollo fell in love with her and demanded Idas give her up. Zeus stopped Apollo from hurting Idas and offered her a choice of the two.
    Marpessa. Marpessa chose Idas over Apollo without any tragic consequences; a rare occcurence in mythology.

She bore twin sons with Poseidon, Pelias and Neleus. She hid them away in fear of what her husband Cretheus would do. She was also the grandmother of Jason.
    Tyro. Her son Pelias tried to kill Jason by sending him on a search for the Golden Fleece.

This fisherman was transformed into a merman by the sea gods. He fell in love with the nymph Scylla. He went to Circe, the enchantress, to ask for a love potion. Circe fell in love with him, and when he would not return her love, she unleashed her jealousy and anger onto the nymph.
    Glaucus. Circe turned Scylla into a sea monster, the same one that attacks Odysseus and Jason.

She was the daughter of Lycaon and one of Zeus's many love interests. When she became pregnant by Zeus, Hera turned her into a bear after her baby was born. When her son grew up to be a hunter, Hera placed the bear in front of him to be killed. Zeus quickly saved her and placed her in the sky for safety.
    Callisto. Callisto became the Great Bear (Big Dipper). Her son, Arcas, later became the Lesser Bear (Little Dipper).
