Fun Trivia: J : Japan

Special Sub-Topic: Life in Japan

What makes Japanese-style toilets different from those seen in America?

They are in the ground. They are actually built into the ground and you have to squat over them. They are quite difficult to use the first time. Luckily most public places have American style toilets as well!

Which flap is worn on top when you wear a traditional kimono?
Left over right. If you wear it right over left it means you are dead. If you want an all silk kimono they are very expensive. There are many undergarments and accessories you have to buy. Luckily a cheaper, cotton version is also common. The length of the sleeves depends on your marital status.

What do you do to show you are enjoying your soup?
Slurp. It is a common practice to slurp your soup or noodles. When you do it, it shows you are enjoying the meal!

Which of these is traditionally acceptable to do with your chopsticks?
Lay them across your plate. Sticking them straight down in your rice or passing food chopstick to chopstick is part of the funeral ceremony and is a taboo during a normal meal. When you want to set them down, lay them over the bowl or next to it. If you want to sample someone else's meal, just pick up the taste off their plate or have them set it on yours. Pointing at someone with them is just considered rude.

Where do you sit at the table when you are the most important guest at a meal?
Farthest from the entrance. It can be different depending on the situation, but this is the most commonly seen.

When drinking sake or beer in a group, what should you do?
Fill everyone else's cups with your bottle. You fill everyone's cup from your bottle, never fill your own. If someone wants to fill yours, you should also hold your glass towards that person.

Which of these is not the 'right thing' to do with cooked, white rice?
Pour soy sauce over it. I'm not sure why this is so, but you just don't do it! White rice is always eaten as it is. If you visit Japan and forget, don't worry, they'll understand!

What are the common Japanese practices when it comes to tipping wait staff?
You do not tip. Some places will have tip jars or will include a tip on the bill, but you never leave money on the table.

Natural hot springs (onsen) and public bath houses (sento) are very popular in Japan. What do you wear when you go into one?
Nothing. It is believed that hot springs have the power of healing because of all the minerals in the water. They can be indoor or outdoor. The baths normally use water from hot springs. They are very relaxing but very hot! Men and women bath separately, but some places have romantic baths for two!

Which of the following is NOT considered rude in Japanese culture?
bowing when you meet someone. It just makes life more pleasant! If you buy something to eat or drink, sit down and enjoy it. Also when walking, it is considered polite to stay to the right.
