Fun Trivia: M : M*A*S*H - Characters and Actors

Special Sub-Topic: 'M*A*S*H' - Father Mulcahy

Let's establish that we know for a fact that Father Mulcahy is a Christian clergyman! However, do we know what particular Christian faith under which he preaches? What branch of Christianity does Father Mulcahy call his own?

Catholicism. Father Mulcahy came from an Irish Catholic background. In fact, in one early episode Henry Blake refers to Father Mulcahy has 'Irish'. His rosary beads and constant cross wielding ought to have given the answer to this question away!

Though George Morgan played Father Mulcahy in the very first episode of the TV series 'M*A*S*H', for the rest of the series, the character was played by what charming actor?
William Christopher. In the 1970 film version, the Father Mulcahy character was played by Rene Auberjonois, who you may recognize from the later TV series 'Benson' and 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'. Before joining the 'M*A*S*H' cast, Christopher appeared in such films as 'The Fortune Cookie' and 'With Six You Get Eggroll' (apparently he liked Chinese food). He also did work on various TV series, including 'Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.' and 'Hogan's Heroes'.

Father Mulcahy has several names that go prior to his surname, but they seem to have shifted in order during the run of the series 'M*A*S*H'. Which of the following is not one of his first or middle names?
Xavier. I have seen his name listed as 'John Patrick Francis', 'John Francis Patrick' and 'Francis John Patrick'. It seems that during the series it could never be decided in which order his names went. His sister referred to him as 'Johnny'.

Father Mulcahy was occasionally referred to by various short names or nicknames, including 'Father' and 'Padre'. He was also referred to by Hawkeye in a very early episode by what 'colorful' name?
Red. In the book and the movie versions of 'M*A*S*H', Father Mulcahy's nickname was 'Dago Red'. In one very early episode, Hawkeye calls him 'Red', but that nickname disappeared, being replaced by the more usual 'Father' or 'Padre' (as Potter usually called him).

Father Mulcahy did not talk about his family very often, but he seemed to have a particularly good relationship with one sister. What was the name of this sister who was, at least for a time, a nun?
Katherine. In one episode, entitled 'Dear Sis', Father Mulcahy writes a letter home to his beloved sister about the goings on in the 4077th. The name Katherine has chosen for her chosen profession is Sister Maria Angelica.

Father Mulcahy is one of the rare characters on 'M*A*S*H' who actually saw his status elevated in the army. By the time the series ended, what was his rank in the service?
Captain. Father Mulcahy went through great pains to get himself a promotion, and it finally happened in the season eight episode 'Captain's Outrageous'. Hawkeye himself pinned the captain's bars on Father Mulcahy's lapel. As Father Mulcahy put it, 'The meek may inherit the earth but it's the grumpy that get promoted!'

In several episodes Father Mulcahy reveals that he has a background in what sport, usually known as one popular with the rough and tumble crowd?
Boxing. Father Mulcahy was, in fact, a champion amateur boxer and in one episode he uses his boxing skills to punch a patient (something he deeply regretted). He was also an avid jogger, and beat another man much more fit than himself in a race (albeit, with a little help from the man above).

Father Mulcahy was an avid supporter of a local orphanage. What was the name of the woman who was in charge of this local charitable organization?
Theresa. Sister Theresa's orphans became a key focus of Father Mulcahy, especially in the later years of the show. He would often donate his poker winnings, or cajole others into donating at the orphanage, when the moment permitted.

In the last 'M*A*S*H' episode, namely 'Goodbye, Farewell and Amen', from what physical problem does Father Mulcahy suffer from as a result of a mortar blast?
Deafness. A quote from that episode: 'Dear Lord, I know there must be a reason, but what is it? I answered the call to do your work. I've devoted my life to it and now how am I supposed to do it? What good am I now? What good is a deaf priest? I prayed for you to help me, and every day I get worse. Are you deaf too?'

Did Father Mulcahy appear as a character in every season of the 'M*A*S*H' TV series?
    y. He was one of four characters, with Hawkeye, Margaret and Klinger, to last the entire run of the series. He was also one of only three characters to appear in both the pilot and the final episodes (with Margaret and Hawkeye). Father Mulcahy also appeared in the 'M*A*S*H' sequel 'AfterM*A*SH'. I hope you enjoyed this quiz, thank you for playing!
