    13. Margaret was betrothed to King James IV and set out with her large retinue to marry him at age 13. She fell passionately in love with him, but she did not know at first what disappointments lay ahead.

What was the reason that Margaret was disappointed with James, the husband that she so passionately loved?
    He had numerous mistresses and illegitimate children. Margaret soon found out that her husband's passion was women, but not her. He had lost his heart to the beautiful Margaret Drummond, but she had been poisoned at a breakfast with her sisters. Almost immediately after her death he began an affair with Janet Kennedy, but his grief for Drummond did not cease. He had loved her and would have married her.

Did Margaret have children by James?
    She had four sons and two daughters, but only one survived past the age of two. Margaret gave birth to six children by James, but only one lived past the age of two. For this reason James began to think that a curse had been put on him. The one child became James V of Scotland, who fathered Mary, Queen of Scots.

How did James, Margaret's first husband, die?
    He died in battle at Flodden Field. When fighting broke out at Flodden Field in 1513, James insisted on riding into battle dressed as a mere soldier. When he was knocked from his horse no one knew that he was the king, so he did not receive any medical help.

Margaret married Archibald Douglas after James' death. What was Archibald's title?
    Earl of Angus. After James' death she married Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus, which did not work out well. He was weak and did not protect her and worst of all she lost her regency and fled to England, not returning until 1517.

What was Margaret asked to surrender to John Stuart when he became regent?
    Her children. When John Stuart became regent she was asked to surrender her children. When she refused to do so they were taken by force. Archibald Douglas did not defend her, but instead stood helplessly by the sidelines, watching the children being taken.

How many children did Margaret have by Archibald Douglas?
    one. She had one daughter by him, named Margaret Douglas, who became the mother of Lord Darnley who married Mary, Queen of Scots. Margaret's marriage to Archibald was eventually annulled in 1527.

Following the annulment of her marriage to Douglas, Margaret married Henry Stewart. How many children did she have with him?
    one. She married Henry Stewart, who later became Lord Methven. They had a child named Dorthea, who died in infancy. When the young king escaped from Archibald Douglas, who now had the regency and custody of the child, he joined his mother and Methven, who became his advisers.

Why did the young king break his relationship with his mother and what did he do to her?
    She was trying to arrange a meeting between him and Henry VIII, so he refused to allow her to divorce Methven. Margaret tried to arrange a secret meeting between her son and brother, but he viewed her as a traitor and refused to speak to her. When she pleaded for a divorce he refused to allow it. She died in 1541 of palsy in Methven Castle, Perthshire.
