Born in 1667: This Irish author wrote a famous novel about a man named Lemuel who goes on many voyages and encounters Lilliputians, Houyhnhnms, and Yahoos.

Jonathan Swift. The novel was "Gulliver's Travels".

Born in 1835: This American author wrote many novels. Some of the characters he wrote about are Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Aunt Polly, Becky Thatcher and Injun Joe.

Samuel Clemens. Samuel Clemens is better known as Mark Twain. "Mark Twain" is a riverboat term (he was a licensed riverboat pilot) meaning "two fathoms" (12 feet or 3.7 meters). Some of his works include "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "The Prince and the Pauper".

Born in 1874: This British statesman started his political career in 1900. He held many posts, including that of Prime Minister for most of the Second World War.

Winston Churchill. Some of Churchill's positions were: Member of the House of Commons (both as a Conservative and a Liberal), Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, First Lord of the Admiralty (twice), Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Prime Minister (twice). He was knighted in 1953, and made an honorary US citizen in 1963. He died in 1965.

Born in 1924: The first African-American woman elected to Congress, she represented New York's Twelfth District. In 1972, she ran as a Democratic candidate for President of the United States of America.

Shirley Chisholm. Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn. She served in the US Congress from 1969 to 1982. When she got to Congress, she was assigned to the House Agricultural Committee. Shirley protested this assignment because she could not figure out how this committee would help her home district of Brooklyn. She was reassigned.

Born in 1929: He was the host of the long running televison series "American Bandstand."

Dick Clark. He was also known at one time as "America's oldest living teenager". He also hosted a New Year's Eve show from Times Square in New York City, welcoming in the years 1973 through 2004. A stroke in late 2004 prevented him welcoming in 2005.

Born in 1930: He was one of the men convicted for the 1972 break-in at the Watergate complex, which led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. He subsquently had his own syndicated radio talk show.

G. Gordon Liddy. George Gordon Battle Liddy has been an Army officer, an FBI agent, an assistant district attorney, a White House aide, a criminal and has written three books.

Born in 1936: An activist in the 1960s and 1970s, he was a co-founder of the Youth International Party, or "Yippies". He was also one of seven men accused of conspiring to start a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Abbie Hoffman. Abbie Hoffman and several of his friends visted the New York Stock Exchange in 1967. They started throwing dollar bills onto the trading floor, and watched as the traders tried to grab the money. Hoffman is the author of "Steal This Book."

Born in 1955: This British pop artist, known for his spikey blonde hair and crooked lip curl, had hit songs in the 1980s including "Dancing with Myself", "White Wedding", "To Be a Lover", and Rebel Yell".

Billy Idol. Born William Broad, Billy Idol also did a remake of Tommy James and the Shondells' "Mony Mony". It was a #1 song for him in 1987.

Born in 1962: This athlete won the 1985 Heisman Trophy. From 1987 to 1990, when he wasn't playing professional baseball with the Kansas City Royals, he was playing professional football with the then Los Angeles Raiders.

Vincent Jackson. Vincent "Bo" Jackson excelled at sports from the time he was in high school. He was on the football, baseball, and track teams. Bo was also on the football team, where he was a running back, and the baseball team at Auburn University.

Born in 1965: The son of a husband-and-wife comedy duo, this actor was in "There's Something about Mary", "Meet the Parents", "Zoolander", and "Mystery Men".

Ben Stiller. His parents are Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara.
