Where were the 1920 Games held?

    Antwerp, Belgium. Berlin had been chosen to host the 1916 Games, which were not held due to the war. After the war ended, Antwerp was given the honour of being the the host city. Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Turkey were not invited.

Which country won most medals in 1920?
    U.S.A.. The U.S.A. won 96 medals, including 41 gold. Sweden won 64 (19 gold), Great Britain won 43 (15 gold), Finland 34 (15 gold). The host country Belgium won 36 (14 gold). 22 of the 29 competing countries won at least one medal.

Which great Finnish athlete, won a silver medal in the 5000 metres track race in 1920, the first of twelve Olympic medals he would win in his career?
    Paavo Nurmi. There was only one Paavo Nurmi, the greatest athlete of his time, but each of the other three Finnish athletes also won gold medals: Hannes Kolehmainen in the 5000m in 1912, and in the Marathon in 1920. Ville Ritola in the 1928 5000m, and Lauri Lehtinen in the 1932 5000m.

    Philip Baker (Great Britain). Philip Baker changed his name to Noel-Baker following his marriage, and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1959. He won his Olympic silver medal in the 1500 metres. Butler (400m), Guillemot (10,000m), and Paddock (200m) were all silver medalists, but none of them ever won a Nobel Prize!

In the 1920 archery events, which country won eight of the ten gold medals, plus four silver and two bronze medals?
    Belgium. Only three countries took part in this event, Belgium, France, and The Netherlands. France won a gold, four silvers and a bronze, and The Netherlands won one gold. Some events only had one or two medals awarded.

    Paris. It is said Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, wanted to give his own country (France), a chance to redeem itself for the shambles that were the 1900 Games.

Benjamin Spock (U.S.A.), who later became a famous pediatrician, won a gold medal in which event in 1924?
    Rowing Eights. Dr. Spock is certainly better known for his book, "Baby and Child Care", than winning Olympic medals! He died in 1998 at the age of 94.

In 1924, Johnny Weissmuller (U.S.A.) won three gold medals and a bronze, in swimming and water polo events. In which event did he win the bronze?
    Water Polo. Johnny Weissmuller starred as Tarzan in twelve movies, and in another thirteen as Jungle Jim.

In the 1924 cycling road race, Frenchman Armand Blanchonnet won by what margin?
    9 minutes 39 seconds. This was the third biggest winning margin in this event, up to 2000, behind only the incredible 19 minute 47 second victory of Aristidis Konstantinidis in 1896, and Rudolph Lewis's 9 minute 45 second win in 1912.
