London was selected to host the games in 2012. It will not be their first as they hosted the Summer Games twice already. When did London host them previously?

    1908 and 1948. London first held the games in 1908. They were due to host them again in 1944, but they were canceled because of World War II. Instead, London hosted the first games after the war in 1948. 2012 London will be the first city to have staged the Summer Games for a third time.

Athens hosted the inaugural games of the modern era in 1896. In which year were the games held there for a second time?
    2004. Athens missed out on both the centenary and the millennium. Sydney, Australia, held the 2000 games. Atlanta USA was host in 1996. Barcelona was the setting for the games in 1992.

Paris lost out to London in its bid to hold the summer games again in 2012. However, France has also hosted the winter sports. How many times altogether have the games been held in France before the 21st century?
    5. The summer games have been held twice in Paris, in 1900 and 1924. France had hosted the Winter Games three times, Chamonix in 1924, Grenoble in 1968, and Albertville in 1992.

When Sydney hosted the Summer Games in 2000, they were not the first in Australia to do this. What was first?
    Melbourne. Melbourne hosted the games in 1956.

The Winter Olympics were held in three towns, two times each in the 20th century. Which three towns were they?
    St. Moritz, Lake Placid, and Innsbruck. St. Moritz, Switzerland, hosted the games in 1928 and 1948. Lake Placid, USA, was the venue in 1932 and 1980. Innsbruck, Austria, was the host in 1964 and 1976. The games were held in Lillehammer in 1994, having previously been held in Oslo, Norway, in 1952.

Germany hosted three different games altogether in the 20th century. In which years were they held?
    1936 and 1972. The summer games were scheduled for Berlin in 1916, but were cancelled due to World War I. Both Winter and Summer Games were held in 1932 in Garmisch, Partenkirchen in February, and in Berlin in August. Munich was the venue for the Summer Games in 1972.

Which Scandinavian capital hosted one set of events twice in the 20th century?
    Stockholm, Sweden. Stockholm hosted the equestrian events in 1956, when the main summer games took place in Melbourne, Australia. It had first played host to the Summer Games in 1912.

Canada was selected to host the Winter Games for a second time in 2010 in Vancouver. Where and when were the Winter Games first held in Canada?
    Calgary in 1988. The Winter Games were held in Canada in 1988 in Calgary. That was Canada's second time as Olympic hosts. The first was when the Summer Games were held in Montreal in 1976.

Japan was scheduled to host both the Winter and Summer Games in 1940, but they were canceled due to war. The same cities of Sapporo and Tokyo hosted the games subsequently. When did those games take place?
    Tokyo in summer 1964, and Sapporo in winter 1972. London had been due to host the 1944 Summer Games, but held them in 1948. St. Moritz, Switzerland, hosted the Winter Games in the same year. The Summer Games in 1952 were held in Helsinki, Finland. The venue for the Winter Games in 1956 was Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.

The USA hosted the games seven times altogether in the 20th century. How many of these were winter games?
    3. The winter games were held in Lake Placid, New York, in 1932, and again in 1980, then in Squaw Valley, California, in 1960. They were also held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002, but that wasn't during the 20th century. The four venues for the Summer Games were St. Louis in 1904, Los Angeles in 1932 and again in 1984, and Atlanta in 1996.
