Special Sub-Topic: Original Casting Choices

Sherrif Bart in 'Blazing Saddles'

Richard Pryor. The studio was worried about Pryor's reputation as a cokehead. Cleavon Little was finally cast in the part. Pryor did get a co-screenwriter credit.

Rhett Butler in 'Gone With The Wind'
Gary Cooper. Gary Cooper was convinced that 'Gone With The Wind' would flop!

Axel Foley in 'Beverly Hills Cop'
Sylvester Stallone. Apparently, Sly didn't like the script.

Superman in 'Superman'
all of the above (Steve McQueen, Robert Redford, Paul Newman). Hollywood's mania for big name stars... I can't imagine picking anyone other than an unknown (at the time, anyway) to play the Man of Steel.

The Waco Kid in 'Blazing Saddles'
Gig Young. Gig got violently ill on the first day of shooting, allegedly due to the DT's. Gene Wilder was a very last second replacement.

Rick Deckard in 'Blade Runner'
Dustin Hoffman. Of all the original casting choices in this quiz, I find this the hardest one to imagine.

Robert Wakefield in 'Traffic'
Harrison Ford. An easy one, I guess. It was in the news a lot. Apparently, Harrison just didn't want to take a pay cut. I think he made a big mistake.

The Monster in 'Frankenstein' (1931)
Bela Lugosi. Lugosi was insulted that he was asked to play a nonspeaking role, and refused to do it.

General Stilwell in '1941'
John Wayne. I can't believe Steven Spielberg had the cojones to ask the Duke to play this part!

The Man With No Name in 'Once Upon A Time In The West'
Clint Eastwood. The great Sergio Leone wanted Eastwood to reprise his role from 'The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly', but it didn't happen. They got Charles Bronson instead.
