The author of the novel the film was based on used a pen name when publishing, to protect relatives still living in Germany from retribution by the Nazis. Likewise, some cast and crew used fictitious names or were uncredited. The film also starred Norma Shearer, Conrad Veidt, Felix Bressart and Philip Dorn.
