Fun Trivia: A : Animals in 'The Simpsons'

Special Sub-Topic: Santa's Little Helper

What breed of dog is Santa’s Little Helper?

Greyhound. He has a sleek tan/brown coat. He used to be a racing dog.

Where did the Simpsons get him from?
Springfield Downs. This was in the first full-length “The Simpsons” episode, “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire”. Bart had wasted all the Christmas savings getting his tattoo removed, and Homer didn’t have his bonus from work. So they went to the Greyhound races and bet all their money on Santa’s Little Helper, but ended up keeping the dog instead of winning money from him.

When Santa’s Little Helper went to Obedience School, what celebrity provided the voice for the dog trainer?
Tracey Ullman. This character was Emily Winthrop. “The Simpsons” originally began as a series of animated shorts on “The Tracey Ullman Show” during the 1980s.

Santa’s Little Helper had a girlfriend, She’s the Fastest. How many puppies did she give birth to?
    25. Hence the title of the episode: “2 Dozen and One Greyhounds”. These puppies were given away to Mr Burns, who wanted to make a greyhound fur tuxedo out of them. Bart and Lisa saved the puppies.

Bart applied for a credit card under Santa’s Little Helper’s name. What was the name that appeared on the actual card?
Santos L. Halper. Bart bought many things with this card, including another dog, Laddie. He just didn’t realise that he would have to pay back all of the money he had charged on the card.

Did Homer ever try to breed Santa’s Little Helper and Snowball II?
    y. Many times, in fact. One of the funniest was after he broke his leg and declared ‘Soon I will have the perfect hybrid. The loyalty of a cat with the cleanliness of a dog!’ This was in “Children of a Lesser Clod”.

Bart once tried to put someone or something in a matter transporter, and Santa’s Little Helper jumped on it and they both went in. Who or what was the other thing?
Snowball II. In “Bart vs. Fly” in one of the Halloween specials, Bart tried to put the cat in the transporter Homer bought from Professor Frink for 35 cents (thanks to zoniegrl4eva for this info). Santa’s Little Helper jumped on top of her and it resulted in a catdog (‘Twice the pet and none of the mess’) and an animal with two behinds (‘Ew. You can be Lisa’s’).

What food did Homer feed the dog when he was trying to make money from grease?
Bacon. This is in the episode “Lard of the Dance”. Marge thinks that the dog has eaten enough bacon because his stomach is bloated and he lies, whimpering on the kitchen floor.

When Santa’s Little Helper is rushed to hospital for an operation, how much will it cost?
$750. This is in “Dog of Death”. The family have to sacrifice things they like so that they can pay for it. He later runs away to Burns’ Manor but comes home to the Simpsons, and in particular Bart, in the end.

Who caused Santa’s Little Helper to suffer a broken leg?
Mr Burns. In “Who Shot Mr. Burns (Part 1)”, Burns strikes oil, which then hits Bart's treehouse, which Bart and the dog were in at the time (thanks to player 'mdlcc' for this info). This is considered to be Bart’s motive for wanting to shoot the 104-year-old man. As we find out later, it was only Maggie who shot him.
