Sea of Okhotsk. The Sea of Okhotsk covers 600,000 square miles. Chief port is Magadan, which is a center for the large gold fields by Kolyma.

Kara Sea. The Kara Sea is frozen much of the year. The rivers Ob and Yenisey flow into it. Chief ports are Novyy Port and Dikson.

Laptev Sea. The Laptev Sea was formerly called the Nordenskj÷ld Sea. The Lena river flows into it. Chief port is Tiksi.

East Siberian Sea. The East Siberian Sea is situated between the Laptev Sea and the Chukchi Sea. Chief port is Pevek, which is the northernmost town in the world with more than 5000 inhabitants.

Bering Sea. The Bering Sea connects by the Bering Strait with the Atlantic Ocean. The Bering Sea and Bering Strait was explorated by Danish navigator Vitus Bering (1728 and 1741) in employ of Russia. His explorations formed the chief basis for the Russian claims to Alaska.
|This sea is situated in the east Malay Archipelago. It borders the Moluccas Islands (Indonesia) on the north, and Wetar Island, Romang Island, Damar Island, Tanimbar Islands etc. (Indonesia) on the south.|
Banda Sea. Max. depth of the Banda Sea is 21.000 feet. Chief port is Ambon. The sea also borders the Banda Islands, which for centuries were important in the spice trade. They were annexed by Portugal in 1512 and conquered by the Dutch in 1621.

Celebes Sea. The Celebes Sea is connected with the Java Sea by the Makassar Strait.

Sulu Sea. The Sulu Sea borders the Sulu Archipelago, which used to be an independent sultanate. The sultanate was terminated by a treaty in 1940 in which the archipelago was ceded to the Philippines.

Andaman Sea. The Andaman Sea is situated east of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The islands were first settled by the British in 1789. Port Blair was settled as an Indian penal settlement in 1858.

East China Sea. The China Sea is divided by Taiwan into the East China Sea and the South China Sea. The South China Sea is enclosed by south east China, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Norwegian Sea. The Norwegian Sea borders most of central and north Norway (north of 61 degrees N) as well as Greenland, Iceland, Spitsbergen, Faroe Islands and Shetland Islands.

Weddell Sea. The Weddell Sea was first visited by the British whaler J.Weddell in 1823.

White Sea. Chief port of the White Sea is Arkhangelsk. The sea is kept open by ice-breakers from October to May. It is important for sealing.

Red Sea. The Red Sea connects with the Mediterranean Sea through the Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal, on the south it connects with the Arabian Sea through the strait of Bab el Mandeb. The Red Sea was traditionally the ttrade route between Egypt and India, from the opening of the Suez Canal (1869) also between Europe and India.

Yellow Sea. The Yellow Sea connects with the East China Sea on the south. It is very shallow. Oil has been found.

Black Sea. The Black Sea borders Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria,Turkey and Georgia.It is connected with the Aegean Sea through the Bosporus, Sea of Marmara and Dardanelles. The question about controlling the inlet to the Black Sea has been controversial for centuries. Today Turkey controls it, based on the Montreux Treaty in 1936.

North Sea. The North Sea is the site of extensive oil and natural-gas fields. Gas was first found in 1965, oil in 1969. The North Sea carries more traffic than any other sea.
