Special Sub-Topic: Sleeping with History

After fleeing Paris and before leaving for England to lead the French resistance, Charles de Gaulle stayed where?
Hint: Think valley of kings.

Chateau Chissay, Chissay en Touraine, France. Charles de Gaulle met the British ambassador here before the provisional government went to Bordeaux and he went to London. Kings Charles VII and Louis XI also resided here.

You may sleep in the same room and bed as General Ulysses S. Grant when you stay where?
Hint: He needed the rest.
Cedar Grove Inn, Vicksburg, Mississippi. Spared because it was owned by relatives of Gen. W.T. Sherman, it still has a shell from the extended siege embedded in the wall of the house, although the Mississippi river has now changed course and is no longer as close to the house.

Winston Churchill toured America and gave his famous "Iron Curtain" speech in this country. What unlikely place did he rest his head?
Hint: Lookout, Missionary.
Read House Hotel, Chattanooga, Tennessee. The city of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, famous Civil War sites, is where he stayed. Themes of the civil war accent this hotel. I made up the other names.

Holy Roman Emperor Charles V gave up the most powerful position on earth to live in monastic seclusion. You can sit in front of the fireplace he had installed where?
Hint: Southwest of Madrid.
Parador Jarandilla de la Vera, Caceres, Spain. While waiting for his rooms to be prepared at the monastery nearby, where his bedroom was literally built into the wall of the church in order to hear mass, he stayed at Jarandilla. Installation of the fireplace was his only request while staying at the castle.

Napoleon was always on the move, but you can stay where he rested his head where?
Hint: He wanted it all.
Hotel D'Europe, Avignon, France. He wanted "all" of Europe. At the hotel, you can still see his framed payment check for the lodging. Once again, I made the other lame names up.

Contemplate the horrors inflicted on mankind when you stay in Hitler's hotel where?
Hint: Rally round the swastika.
Hotel Deutscher Hof, Nuremberg, Germany. A corner double room on the European first or American second floor, is still a special request of certain "nostalgic" guests. The "rally" hint refers to the location of the Nazi party rallies held here.

Mozart was a traveler. Which of the following hotels has he not stayed in?
Hint: How do you solve a problem like Maria?
Weisses Rossl, Salzburg, Austria. "Maria" is a Sound of Music tune, and the movie was filmed in and around Salzburg. You can visit Mozart's birthplace in Salzburg, but you can't stay there.

Where did Monet (the impressionist painter, for those of you who shouldn't be taking this quiz) stay in and paint from?
Hint: Reflect on it!
Hotel Europe and Regina, Venice, Italy. Painted "reflections" are a trademark of Venice.

Jean Jacques Rousseau, the famous French philosopher, lived out his final days and died where?
Hint: He and Charles de Gaulle are "close".
Chateau Ermenonville, Ermenonville, France. Close to Charles de Gaulle airport, it has a beautiful "moat" with swans and great views.

Katherine Hepburn was a fan of Provence. Where is one of her favorite haunts?
Hint: Daudet's windmill.
La Regalido, Fontvieille, France. The rooms are named after herbs, and the vaulted restaurant has a meaningful "star". Daudet's windmill of literary fame is nearby.
