Not many people know that tennis was one of the original nine sports in the modern Olympic Games at Athens in 1896. Who was the winner of the first ever modern Olympic gold medal in tennis?

    John Boland. John Boland of Ireland, later to become a British Member of Parliament, defeated Dionysios Kasdaglis of Greece to become the first Olympic tennis champion. The other three mentioned here are all early Wimbledon champions.

Who was the first ever women's winner in tennis in the Olympics?
    Charlotte Cooper. In the 1900 Paris Olympics, Charlotte Cooper, the Wimbledon champion of 1895, 1896 and 1898, beat Helene Prevost in the singles final to become the first woman in any sport to win an Olympic gold medal. She also won the mixed doubles title that year with Reginald Doherty.

The tennis events in the 1908 London Olympics were held twice.
    True. In 1908, two separate tennis events were held. The first was staged on covered courts at The Queen's Club in London, and the second on the grass courts of Wimbledon after The Championships. Britain's Arthur Gore took the men's gold medal in singles in the first event, while Britain's Josiah Ritchie won the second and more popular event.     Jennifer Capriati. Capriati became the youngest ever winner of the women's singles in Olympics when she won in 1992 at the age of 16. She had earlier beaten the home favorite Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the semifinals.

It was an American sweep in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Who won the men's singles gold?
    Andre Agassi. Agassi was lucky to survive a stormy quarterfinal in which he was almost disqualified for losing his temper. But in a one-sided final, Agassi swept away Spain's Sergi Bruguera and called his win as his greatest accomplishment in the sport.

    Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Kafelnikov, who had become Russia’s first player to be ranked world No. 1, also won the French Open in 1996 and the Australian Open in 1999. He beat Tommy Haas of Germany in the gold medal match of Sydney Olympics.

    Venus Williams. Venus prevented Russia from taking both singles gold medals in Sydney when she beat Elena Dementieva in the finals. She also took the women's doubles gold with her sister Serena.
