    Jim Frey. With a 97-65 record, the Royals ran away from the Oakland A's, winning the Western Division by 14 games.

Who managed the Phillies in the '80 series?
    Dallas Green. Green took over for Ozark late in the '79 season and then led them to a 91-71 record in '80, edging out Montreal by one game.

Who did the Royals and Phillies play in their respective League Championship Series?
    New York / Houston. Kansas City dispatched the Yankees in three straight, but the Phillies had to go the full five, including four extra-inning games, to take care of Houston.

George Brett nearly hit .400 that year, finishing at .390, so he was a critical member of the Royals. But Brett nearly missed the series because of what ailment?
    hemorrhoids. Following surgery, Brett was quoted as saying, "All my troubles are behind me now" and apparently they were. He hit .375, had a home run, two doubles, a triple and three RBI for the series. And he stole one base so sliding must not have been a concern.

    Frank Edwin. Frank Edwin McGraw was born on August 30th, 1944 in Martinez California. During the '80 season, he posted five wins, 20 saves and a miniscule 1.47 ERA.

U.L. Washington was Kansas City's shortstop in '80. What did U.L. keep in his mouth during games?
    a toothpick. U.L. "Sweetstick" Washington kept a toothpick in his mouth throughout the game. Don't know if he ever swallowed one or not!

The Phillies finished third in the National League for team home runs with 117. How many did they hit in the '80 World Series?
    3. Mike Schmidt hit two of them and Bake McBride got the other one. The Royals had eight roundtrippers in the series.

Which Phillies southpaw posted a 2 and 0 record with a 2.40 ERA and 17 Ks in his two starts?
    Steve Carlton. "Lefty" pitched like a champion, in the series and the regular season. During the regular season he had 24 wins, a 2.34 ERA and 286 Ks.

Who was MVP of the series?
    Mike Schmidt. Michael Jack Schmidt led the Phils to the world championship with a .381 BA, two home runs, a double and seven RBI. The Phils claimed the crown in six games.
