Special Sub-Topic: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Huck sees some track in the snow and knows that his father is back in town. He asks Jim to consult a magic trinket to find out what Pap would do and what Huck should do. What trinket does Jim consult?

Magic hair ball. Jim had a huge hairball that was pulled from a cow's stomach. He believed that an imp lived inside the hairball and could tell the future. After payment of one counterfeit quarter, Jim gave Huck a very ambivalent answer. Some hairball!

Why did Pap come looking for Huck?
He heard Huck had money and he wanted to get his hands on it. Pap, the town drunk, had left town and rambled about without a care as to the well-being of his only son. He returned to get the money Huck and Tom Sawyer found in the cave (in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer").

What was NOT something that made Mrs. Judith Loftus realize that Huck wasn't really a girl, but a boy in disguise?
He snorted loud and spit on the ground. Huck had sneaked over to her cabin to get some info on the dealings of the town since his faked death. She saw right through his disguise. It didn't help that he forgot the fake name he gave her, saying "Sarah Williams" the first time and "Mary Williams" the second.

Jim and Huck were heading for Cairo, a city at the southern tip of Illinois, so they could get on the Ohio River and head up through the free states. Why didn't they ever get there?
They passed Cairo in the thick fog. Jim and Huck got separated in a thick fog. Huck was in their canoe and Jim was on the raft. When the fog finally cleared, and they passed a few more towns, they realized that they had drifted right past the Ohio River and Jim's path to freedom.

Did Huck believe that the two men on their raft were really a duke and a king?
No. Huck decided that even though he was sure they were lying, it didn't do any harm to call them silly names and bow and grovel a bit around them. He opted not to let Jim in on the secret because he thought Jim could never hide the fact that he knew the truth.

Which of the following was NOT an occurrence on one of the three nights that the Duke and the King performed "The Royal Nonesuch" in Arkansas?
Only twelve people showed up and thought the show was terrible. At first, the two scoundrels tried to put on a Shakespearian performance, but very few people showed up and they laughed throughout all the dramatic performances. Then they decided to scam the town by putting a fake show on for the men only. On the third night they skipped out of town with all the reciepts before they got attacked with smelly veggies.

Where did Huck hide the Wilks girls' inheritance, after he stole it from the King and Duke?
In Peter Wilks' coffin. When the two real brothers of the deceased returned to town, there was much confusion as each pair tried to prove their identity. The real Wilks brothers identified a tattoo on Peter's chest. The money, which Huck had hidden in the coffin before Peter was buried, was recovered when the body was disenterred to check for the tattoo.

When Huck got to the Phelps' farm to try and get Jim back, Mrs Phelps mistook him for another young man who was supposed to be paying a visit. Who did she think Huck was?
Tom Sawyer. Huck played along when she exclaimed "It's you!" upon his arrival at the farm. He prayed she didn't ask him to reveal any identifying information, until she finally said to her husband "It's Tom Sawyer!" Huck couldn't believe his luck. He slipped into the role of Tom easily and filled Tom in. So, on his arrival, Tom pretended to be his own brother Sid.

What was NOT one of the things Huck and Tom did to get ready to rescue Jim?
Dig a hole with case knives. Tom had very elaborate ideas on how this rescue should be carried out. He really wanted to dig a hole to set Jim free using their knives but it was just too hard. They decided to use shovels and picks and pretend they were case knives. Incidentally, although they did capture rats and snakes, most of them got away within Aunt Sally's house - she wasn't happy about that at all!

What secret did Tom keep from Huck and Jim during their daring rescue operation?
Jim was already a free man. Miss Watson felt so bad that she was going to sell Jim to someone so he'd be further away from his wife and children that she set him free in her will. The whole escapade to set Jim free was completely moot as he was free already! Thanks for taking this quiz, I hope you enjoyed it. :)
