Fun Trivia: O : Orbison, Roy

Special Sub-Topic: The Big O: Part 1

"It's hard to understand, that the touch of your hand..."

"Cryin'". "..Can start me cryin'.. " "Cryin'" entered the UK charts on September 21, 1961, reaching a high spot of 25th place. The B-side was called "Candy Man".

"...Don't you cry, just because he said goodbye. Oh ah ha, no don't cry."
"Blue Angel". This was Roy's second big hit in the UK, entering the charts in October 1960 and staying in the charts for sixteen weeks.

"My heart was breaking, which one would it be, You turned around and walked away with me." is the finale to the song "Running Scared"?
    t. Roy said that during the recording of "Cryin'", "I was singing very softly at the end of the record, and some one flipped the switch and said we're gonna lose the record if you don't really hit that note. So we ran it by one more time an I just hit it." He also said "People always think I am kinda sad because of the songs, but in this one I get the girl!"

"I'll treat you right, Come to me, baby, be mine tonight..."
"Oh! Pretty Woman". This was Roy's biggest ever hit in the UK and worldwide. The correct title is "Oh! Pretty Woman", but I know of no radio DJ who uses the full title- usually they announce "Pretty Woman".

Are these lyrics from the song "Pin Ball Arcade"? "But no, so dipping my hand in the back of my jeans, I pulled out a handfull of coins to feed the machines."
    n. The correct answer is "Penny Arcade". In September 1969 the song "Penny Arcade" reached the 40th position in the UK charts and stayed there for just three weeks. After dropping out for a week, it re-entered and stayed in the charts for a further eleven weeks, peaking at number 27.

"There goes my baby, there goes my heart, They're gone forever so far apart."
"Only The Lonely". The full title of this song is "Only The Lonely (Know How I Feel)", which you may find odd as he actually sings "Only The Lonely Know the way I feel tonight". It reached number one in the UK but originally went in for one week at number 36, before re-entering a few weeks later and staying there for 23 weeks.

"Saving nickels, saving dimes, Working 'till the sun don't shine."
Blue Bayou. As a boy I did not know what a bayou was, but this song with its evocative lyrics led me to imagine deep azure lagoons with exotic multi- coloured tropical fish and dusky maidens. I am still not sure what a bayou is, but in any case I hope they are as good as my imagination. Especially the dusky maidens!

"Meet Me Tonight, Love Me Right, and Everything Is Gonna Be Fine" Is on the B side of the hit song "Workin' For The Man".
    f. The lyrics are from the song "Workin' For The Man". It reached number 50 in the UK charts for just one week in November 1962. The B- side was called "Leah".

"Too sweet your kisses, but my heart still misses, The way that things used to be."
"Goodnight". In 1965 Roy had four UK chart successes: "Goodnight", "(Say) You're My Girl", "Ride Away", and "Crawling Back"- all got into the top ten.

"Darkness come and she will take me by the hand, lead me to a twilight land."
"She's A Mystery To Me". "Mystery Girl" was the title of the album from which "She's A Mystery To Me" is taken. Other titles taken from the album and to make the charts were "California Blue" and "You Got It".
