Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tabaqui visits the wolves in their den in the story "Mowgli's Brothers". What other name is Tabaqui called?

Answer: The Dish-licker

Tabaqui, the Jackal, is despised by the wolves as a trouble-maker. They are also afraid of him because he can have periods of madness called Dewanee (rabies).
2. Who are the Gidur-log?

Answer: The Jackal People

The Gidur-log is the name of the Jackal People. We find this out when Tabaqui enters the wolf's den seeking scraps of food to eat.
3. The tiger in "The Jungle Book" has two names. Most people know him as Shere Khan but his mother gave him another name. What was it?

Answer: Lungri

Lungri means "the Lame One" as the tiger had been lame since birth. This means that to survive, Shere Khan has to hunt easier prey, such as cattle and man. Akela is the leader of the wolf pack. Mowgli is the man-cub.
4. Who teaches the wolf cubs the Law of the Jungle?

Answer: Baloo

Baloo is an old Indian brown bear. Bagheera is a black panther. Raksha is the mother wolf who raises Mowgli.
5. Bagheera offered to pay a price for Mowgli's life at the wolf council meeting. What did Bagheera offer?

Answer: One fat bull

Shere Khan demands Mowgli at the council meeting but Akela asks for anyone to stand by the boy. Both Bagheera and Baloo vouch for him.
6. Who, or what, is the "Dead Wolf"?

Answer: A pack leader who is unable to kill his prey at the first attempt

Akela, the pack leader, is under continuous pressure from the younger males to show he is still the boss. The minute he is unable to kill his prey on the first attempt he is considered ripe to be overthrown. This also means that Mowgli will no longer have Akela's protection.
7. What is the secret that Bagheera tells Mowgli in an attempt to show him how serious is the danger that he faces?

Answer: Bagheera has a scar from wearing a collar

Bagheera was born at the King's Palace at Oodeypore. He still bears the mark of the collar he was forced to wear.
8. To protect himself from Shere Khan at the Council meeting Bagheera advises Mowgli to get the "Red Flower". Who, or what is the "Red Flower"?

Answer: Fire

The "Red Flower" is fire. Mowgli has to get it from the village and keep it alive until the showdown with Shere Khan.
9. Finally Mowgli was named by the she-wolf. What does Mowgli mean?

Answer: The Frog

Right from the beginning Raksha is fond of Mowgli. This is because as soon as they meet he nurses from her alongside her cubs. For this reason she faces down Shere Khan and shows him why she got the nickname of "the Demon" within the pack.
10. After the confrontation at the council rock Mowgli leaves to join the local village. On which river is the village near?

Answer: Waingunga

The local village is situated on the Waingunga river. The Ganges is the most well-known of India's rivers. It is held sacred by the followers of Hinduism. The Luni river is in Rajastan in western India. The name Luni comes from the Sanskrit for salt river as it is excessively saline. The Indus is a trans-Himalayan river in Asia. Its annual average flow is twice that of the Nile.
