Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who called Dostoevsky "Russia's evil Genious"?

Answer: Maxim Gorky

Gorky made the statement in 1905. D.H. Lawrence had less flattering things to say about Dostoevsky, likening him to "the rat, slithering along in hate, in the shadows, and in order to belong to the light, professing love, all love." In 1920 Hesse professed his fear of Dostoevsky's "slavic murkiness." Of the four men listed, only Berdyaev thought highly of Dostoevsky.
2. Which character believed that "everything is permitted"?

Answer: Ivan Karamazov

Answer: Natasya Filippovna

Natasya Filippovna's painting is carried by Rogozhin. Grushenka is the love interest of both Dimitri and Fyodor Karamazov in "The Brothers Karamazov." Katerina Ivanovna is the consumptive wife of Marmeladov in "Crime and Punishment." Dounia is the sister of Raskolnikov in "Crime and Punishment."

Rodya is a nickname of the main character Raskolnikov. Luzhin is engaged to Raskolnikov's sister, and Profiry is an official investigating the murders. Kolya is one of Katerina Ivanovna's children from a previous marriage, and Rodka is yet another nickname for Raskolnikov.
6. In what year was "The Double" published?

Answer: 1846

In 1842 Dostoevsky had not yet been published. "Poor Folk", published in 1846, was Dostoevsky's first publication. He produced six publications in 1848, but none of them was "The Double", and in 1850 he was imprisoned in a Siberian work camp and did not publish.
