    Talut. Ayla and Jondalar first see Talut. He was the biggest man that Ayla had ever seen, even bigger that Jondalar! She decided to go with the Mamutoi because she saw that Talut had smiled.

What is the name of the person who fell in love with the horses?
    Latie. Latie was the girl who fell in love with the horses, especially Racer because he was only a baby.

What hearth (besides the cooking hearth) must you walk through first to get to the Mammoth Hearth?
    The Lion Hearth. The Lion Hearth is the first hearth that you must walk through to get to the Mammoth Hearth.

Who is Ayla attracted to?
    Ranec. Ayla is attracted to Ranec, despite herself. He was the first person she saw with dark skin.

What is the name of the child of mixed spirits?
    Rydag. Rydag is the child of mixed spirits that Ayla took an immediate liking to. He had a heart defect and Ayla did what she could for him.

Who did Ayla prevent from choking to death?
    Nuvie. Ayla prevented Nuvie from choking to death on a gristly piece of bone.

Who was the person who first suggested that they adopt Ayla?
    Nezzie. After the blow out with Frebec, Ayla told Jondalar she wanted to go back to her valley. Nezzie overheard them and suggested to Talut that they should adopt her.

What did Lion Camp do for Ayla that made her feel welcomed?
    They built an annex for Whinny and Racer. Lion Camp built an annex for Whinny and Racer. Ayla was so overcome with happiness.

What was the name of the only pregnant woman in Lion Camp?
    Fralie. Fralie was the only pregnant woman in Lion Camp. It was her third pregnancy and her most difficult. She had the stress of moving to Lion Camp recently, and the stress of having to hear Frebec and Crozie argue all the time.

Who was the only person opposed to Ayla being adopted?
    Frebec. Frebec was the only person opposed to having Ayla adopted. Jondalar finally convinced him with her special firestones.

When Rydag had his first attack of the heart, what did Ayla treat him with?
    Foxglove. Ayla didn't know the Mamutoi word for the plant. She described the plant to Mamut and he told her it was foxglove. Even though it was strong and too much of it could kill Rydag, Ayla had no choice but to give it to him as it was the only thing strong enough to make his heart beat.

Who are the co-leaders of Lion Camp?
    Talut and Tulie. Talut and Tulie are the co-leaders of Lion Camp. They are also brother and sister.

What color was Wolf's mother?
    Black. Wolf's mother was a lone black wolf. Her color stood out against the snow covered area and made it hard for her to conceal herself while hunting. Her mate died early in the winter. Her unusual color caused her to go into estrous in the wrong season. She originally had more than one pup, but the rest died and only Wolf was left.

What was Wolf's mother trying to steal from Ayla?
    Ermine. Wolf's mother was trying to steal ermine from Ayla. She was trapping them to make a special tunic for Jondalar. Ayla killed the black wolf with her sling and when she noticed she was a nursing mother, she trailed the wolf's tracks back to her den and discovered the single orphaned pup. She took it back to Lion Camp to raise.

What was the name of the premature baby born in Lion Camp?
    Bectie. Bectie was born too early. Ayla told Fralie she would have to keep her from crying as it would take her milk away for growing. She told Frebec and Crozie they were not to argue anymore.

Who was the runner that came to give Lion Camp a message?
    Ludeg. The runner was Ludeg. He was petrified to see a wolf inside Lion Camp.

What did Tulie give Ayla for her adoption?
    A decorated box of salt. Tulie's gift was most expensive. She gave Ayla a decorated box full of salt.

What was Talut's favorite drink?
    Bouza. Talut loved Bouza... but he always woke up with a headache the morning after, that is until Ayla made a special drink that Talut relieved him of his headache.

At the Summer Meeting, who was the Red Foot that was attracted to Jondalar?
    Mygie. Mygie was the Red Foot who was attracted to Jondalar. She was wearing red feet, because she was teaching the young men how to make love to a woman, so they would be better prepared when they participated in a young girl's First Rites.

Who did Latie want to participate in her First Rites?
    Jondalar. Latie was very attracted to Jondalar, and wanted Jondalar to participate in her First Rites. She was crushed when he declined because to him she was more like a sister or close cousin. Tulie felt that Jondalar did the right thing, and as she put it, if to him she was like a sister it would taint the ceremony.

Who was the male co-leader of Mammoth Camp?
    Vincavec. Vincavec was the male leader of Mammoth Camp. He wanted Ayla to be his because she had high status, and would make his Mammoth Camp a true Mammoth Camp, since she was adopted into the Mammoth Hearth by Mamut.

Who did Ranec promise to form a union with at the previous Summer Meeting?
    Tricie. Ranec promised to form a union with Tricie. She was a Red Foot then, and he pursued her. She became pregnant and at this meeting she wanted Ranec to know she had his child.

What is the name of Tricie's son?
    Ralev. Ralev was Tricie's and Ranec's son. He had red hair and very light skin, but his facial features were of Ranec's.

Who was considered the First Healer among the Mamutoi?
    Lomie. Lomie was First among the Healers. She was going to teach Ayla everything she knew, but Ayla and Jondalar left before she had the chance to teach her.
