Two years after his wife's death, John avoids a dinner party and drives to Richmond. On the way, his car stalls and his cell phone quits working. He walks to a nearby house. Whom does he meet at the door?

Gordon Smallwood. Gordon (Will Patton) is waiting for John at the door with a shotgun. It seems that Gordon is certain John has visited his home on three previous occasions. Sgt. Connie Mills (Laura Linney) arrives to resolve the situation and escorts John to a hotel. It's at this point that John realizes he is 400 miles from his destination of Richmond.

Which state does Point Pleasant share a border with on the Ohio River?

Ohio. In one scene scene Gere's character looks over a map where it distinctly provides this information. Point Pleasant is just across the river from Ohio. There is a river museum nearby as well as a Mothman Museum. The Silver Bridge traverses the river between West Virginia and Ohio.

John makes amends with Gordon after their first less than cordial meeting. Later, Gordon shares with John what he has heard from a mysterious source in the sink. "Denver 9 ..." What event does this ultimately refer to?

John deciphers a phone message purportedly from Indrid about a tragedy on the Ohio River. What does John interpret this to mean?

John is drawn back to Point Pleasant after a phone call from Connie. The forecast of something disastrous to happen there is about to occur. A great tragedy on the Ohio River ... What is it?

bridge collapse. There is a traffic jam on the Silver Bridge on that chilly Christmas Eve. The stress on the bridge causes it to collapse. Connie has fallen in the river with her police cruiser. John goes into the river after her and manages to pull her to the surface. John then asks the rescue worker if the search has been completed. He says there have been 36 fatalities. "Wake up 37." Connie would have been the 37th victim. On December 15th, 1967, the real Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant collapsed and 46 deaths were reported.
