Special Sub-Topic: The Princes Highway - from NSW to SA


At one end of the Princes Highway is Sydney, but there are many opinions about where it finishes. Where does it actually finish?

    Port Augusta. Many people believe it finishes at Melbourne, but it keeps on going until Port Augusta, 308km from Adelaide.

This small town, about 90km from Sydney, just off the highway, has a spectacular blowhole.
    Kiama. Other attractions include Minnamurra Falls, only about 10km west of Kiama, Minnamurra River downstream from Minnamurra Falls, and Saddleback Mountain Lookout.

This seaside town, 360km south of Sydney, is very scenic, and has a great golf course. Montague Island is located off shore of this town.
    Narooma. The golf course has been voted in the top 100 public golf courses in Australia. Two holes are played over the ocean. The town is on the mouth of the Wagonga Inlet.

This town, just off the highway, is situated halfway between Bermagui and Merimbula on the mouth of the Bega River.
    Tathra. Attractions include Lake Wallagoot, 9km south east, and Bournda National Park, 11km to the east.

This holiday town at the eastern end of the Gippsland Lakes is around 35km east of Bairnsdale.
    Lakes Entrance. There are many lakes in the area, and the huge 90 Mile Beach. There is a Fun Park 4km east.

This city on Port Phillip is the capital of Victoria.
    Melbourne. Melbourne was founded in 1835. The city is the second largest in Australia and was the capital city of Australia after the adoption of Federation in 1901, until Canberra was founded later.

This town is 12km west of the junction of the scenic Great Ocean Road and the Princes Highway.
    Warrnambool. This seaside city sits on Lady Bay. The sea around Warrnambool is treacherous, as over 100 ships have been wrecked. The fishing town of Port Fairy is 28km west of Warrnambool.

This city, located 460km SE of Adelaide, is famous for its extinct volcano.
    Mt Gambier. Mt Gambier is located in the middle of the biggest softwood pine plantation in Australia. There are many historic buildings built from white Mt Gambier stone.

This town is only 79km by road to Adelaide, and is situated on Saunders Creek.
    Murray Bridge. Yes, that's right, it's on the Murray River. It is Australia's largest river town. The town was founded in 1850's, when it was a port for riverboat traders.

This major city, situated on the River Torrens, is the capital city of South Australia.
    Adelaide. The city is on the eastern side of Gulf St Vincent. It was first settled in 1836, but not by convicts like many other major cities of Australia. If you want to shop in Adelaide, go to Rundle Mall, in the city centre.
