Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Back in 1980 I was given the book "Thieves' World". When I opened the cover, I entered the City of Sanctuary. There I found the vilest of villains and the darkest of heroes and I was hooked. Sadly, one day the books stopped coming and I put the memory of them in the back of my mind. Years later, I found the book "Sanctuary" and decided to reread the originals. How many books were in the first series before the hiatus? (Hint: you will know by the end of the quiz)

Answer: 12

The twelve books were published between 1979 and 1989. Although popularity waned in the later years, enough interest in the series resulted in Lynn Abbey starting a second set in 2002 with "Sanctuary".

The following authors have contributed to TW during at least one of the two series:
Poul Anderson, Robert Asprin, Robin Wayne Bailey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, John Brunner, C.J. Cherryh, John DeCles, Christine DeWees, David Drake, Diane Duane, Philip José Farmer, Raymond E. Feist, Jeff Grubb, Joe Haldeman, Duane McGowen, Vonda N. McIntyre, Dennis McKiernan, Chris Morris, Janet Morris, Jody Lynn Nye, Andrew Offutt, Jodie Offutt, Diane Paxson, Mark Perry, Mickey Zucker Reichert, Selina Rosen, A.E. Van Vogt, and C.S. Williams
2. What about the original series was unique and a "first" for a fantasy or sword & sorcery anthology series?

Answer: Authors could share and use other authors' characters

"Thieves' World" had all of these and more, but it is the first shared world fantasy or sword & sorcery anthology.
3. Although there were some guidelines (Thieves' World Bible) on how the authors could use the other authors' characters, what was the primary "no can do" usage?

Answer: Kill a shared character without permision

Duels, cameos, rape, and emotional relationships were allowed. Character interaction was encouraged, but not necessary.
4. Every author had the option to write their own novels based on their characters. Not all TW Characters started in the anthologies, and not all remained there. Poul Anderson's Cappen Varra first appeared in a short story in 1957, and at least two characters, Jamie the Red and Lythade, went on to their own titles and worlds. How many novels were written as canon of the original anthologies?

Answer: 7

The seven were:
"Beyond Sanctuary", "Beyond the Veil", "Beyond Wizardwall" by Janet Morris
"Shadowspawn", "The Shadow of Sorcery" by Andrew Offutt
"Dagger" by David Drake
"Sanctuary" by Lynn Abbey

"Sanctuary" began the new series, but can and does stand alone. There are numerous short stories, collections, and non-continuity novels.
5. By title, what is the order of the first four books in the first series?

Answer: "Thieves' World", "Tales from the Vulgar Unicorn ", "Shadows of Sanctuary", "Storm Season"

One-Thumb is a serial killing Bartender at the Vulgar Unicorn, Kitty Kat is the nickname for a Prince assigned to the City of Sanctuary, Lalo is a painter and magician, Ischade is a witch, and the Stepsons are a group of partnered warriors. Hermit and Troll are friends of mine on Funtrivia.
6. "Thieves' World" inspired other entertainment media and merchandising; which of the following is NOT a medium to carry the "Thieves' World" Name?

Answer: A weekly Saturday morning cartoon series

Green Ronin Publishing produces "Thieves' World" RPGs.
In 1983 Mayfair Games produced a board game entitled "Sanctuary".
Starblaze Graphics put out a six issue graphic novels series based on "Thieves' World".

As recently as 2006 options for movies and video games have been discussed and rumored on the internet.
7. By title, what is the order of books 5 through 8 in the first series?

Answer: "The Face of Chaos", "Wings of Omen", "The Dead of Winter", "Soul of the City"

"Thieves World is centered around the city of Sanctuary. It is a tough, gritty town populated by gutter-scum, evil mages, vampiric sorceresses, and walking gods. Heroes are often out for themselves, and life is cheap, in the town described as "the anus of the Rankan Empire.".." A review by Paxlampry on Squidoo.com

Mild by today's standards, TW was very risqué for its time. It was the perfect place for the imagination of an adolescent reader bored with "dad's" Fantasy.
8. The "Thieves' World" hiatus ended in 2002; what are the titles of the first two books in the second series?

Answer: "Turning Points" and "Enemies of Fortune"

Lynn Abbey used her book "Sanctuary" to update and restart "Thieves' World". The book is set 30 years later and the time has not been gentle on the city of Sanctuary. This restart gave the other authors:

An opportunity to build new characters.
Tie off loose or incomplete story lines from the first series.
Presented fixed events that effected everyone to establish continuity.
9. By title, what is the order of the last 4 books (9-12) in the first series?

Answer: "Blood Ties", "Aftermath", "Uneasy Alliances", "Stealers' Sky"

Here is my suggested reading order, including the canon novels.

TW#1 "Thieves' World"
TW#2 "Tales from the Vulgar Unicorn"
Novel: "Dagger"
TW#3 "Shadows of Sanctuary"
Novel: "Shadowspawn"
TW#4 "Storm Season"
TW#5 "Face of Chaos"

Novel: "Beyond the Veil"
Novel: "Beyond Wizardwall"
TW#6 "Wings of Omen"
TW#7 "The Dead of Winter"
TW#8 "Soul of the City"
TW#6 "Blood Ties"
TW#10 "Aftermath"
Novel: "The Shadow of Sorcery"
TW#11 "Uneasy Alliances"
TW#12 "Stealers' Sky"
Novel: "Sanctuary"
New TW#1 "Turning Points"
New TW#2 "Enemies of Fortune"
10. What is the name of a character in both the "Thieves' World" series and a category of characters in the "Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan?

Answer: Shadowspawn

Created by Andrew Offutt, Shadowspawn is a walking arsenal, son of a god, and Sanctuary's greatest thief.
