Answer: Milsons Point and Dawes Point

Two steel fabrication workshops were erected for the contractors on the Sydney Harbour Bridge at Milson's Point and the steel for the girders etc was, mostly, imported from England. The site is where Luna Park stands today!

Twenty proposals were received from around the world and in 1924 the company, Dorman Long and Co from Middlesbrough, England, had their proposal accepted.

The general design of the Sydney Harbour Bridge was by by Dr J J C Bradfield (he worked in the NSW Department of Public Works), and, as the Chief Engineer, he is considered as the "father" of the Bridge. The highway which traverses the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the Bradfield Highway.

The nearly 90m high pylons are made of concrete, with a granite face. The granite was sourced near Moruya, 300km south of Sydney, and three ships were specially built to carry the 'dressed' granite blocks north to Sydney.

The NSW Premier was meant to declare the Bridge open, but, Captain Francis de Groot of the "New Guard" (a paramilitary group) rode up on his horse and slashed the ribbon with his sword immediately gaining him a place in Australian history!

272,000 litres were used to give the Bridge its first three coats of paint. The Bridge today requires approximately 80,000 litres for each coat of paint and it is a non-stop maintenance job.

Answer: 1976

In June of 1976, the one billionth vehicle crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In the years 1932 to 1965 half of these had crossed the bridge and the second five hundred million vehicles crossed between 1965 and 1976!

With fantastic views of the city, the harbour and the rest of the Bridge, there are nearly two hundred steps up to the Pylon Lookout which is at the south eastern end of the Bridge, roughly 87m above sea level. There are three exhibits to view, as you climb, that show the construction of the Bridge, the men who built it and Dr Bradfield, the Chief Engineer.
