Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first five artists were chosen by a panel of various music industry executives. It's no surprise to see the name of Elvis Presley in that inaugural list. What was the title of "The King"s first UK #1?

Answer: All Shook Up

Regarded by many as the most important artist of all time, Elvis Presley first hit the UK music charts in 1956 with "Heartbreak Hotel". In June 1957 he scored his first #1 with "All Shook Up". With re-issues and re-mixes of old songs still being made today, the hits are likely to continue.
2. Which Liverpudlian band were also chosen by the panel to be inducted into the UK's Music Hall of Fame?

Answer: The Beatles

Yes, of course it was The Beatles. Possibly the most influential and successful group ever, with numerous hit singles and albums to their name, their place in any Hall of Fame is secure. Oddly enough though, a recent poll put the band's "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" top of a list of worst singles of all time. I could think of a lot worse, but that's another story...
3. Our next inductee into the UK's Music Hall of Fame was born in Jamaica in 1945. Who was this legendary artist?

Answer: Bob Marley

Another hugely influential artist, Bob Marley brought his unique style of reggae to the UK charts with hits such as "No Woman No Cry", "Exodus", "Is This Love" and "Buffalo Soldier". Bob Marley died of cancer on 11th May 1981. His award at the Hall of Fame ceremony was accepted by his wife, Rita.
4. The next band to be inducted into the UK's Music Hall of Fame consists of Paul Hewson, David Evans, Larry Mullin Jr. and Adam Clayton. Who are they better known as?

Answer: U2

Formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1976, U2 first graced the UK charts with "Fire" in 1981, and have accrued many hit singles and albums ever since. In 2004, it was announced that a re-make of the Band Aid hit "Do They Know It's Christmas?" was to be made. U2 lead singer Bono is the only artist from that original recording who has been asked to appear on the re-make.
5. The fifth artist chosen by the panel for induction to the UK's Music Hall of Fame is one of the most successful female artists of all time in both the UK and America. Who is this "Like a Virgin" star?

Answer: Madonna

Madonna Ciccone was born in August 1958, and her first UK top ten hit was "Holiday" in 1984. In a sometimes controversial career Madonna has reached #1 with songs as diverse as "Into The Groove", "Like A Prayer", "Vogue" and "Frozen".
6. The next five artists inducted into the UK's Music Hall of Fame were chosen by viewers of Channel 4 television. Which artist was chosen to represent the 1950s?

Answer: Cliff Richard

Cliff Richard (born Harry Webb in October 1940) is unique amongst British artists in that he has had a UK #1 hit single in five different decades, his first being "Livin' Doll" way back in 1959. Many of his early hits were backed by The Shadows, and he has also performed with artists such as Olivia Newton-John, Phil Everly, Elton John and Van Morrison. Cliff Richard was knighted in 1995.
7. Which band were chosen by Channel 4 viewers to represent the 1960s in the UK's Music Hall of Fame?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

Another obvious choice for any Hall of Fame (they are already members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), the Rolling Stones began their hit making career with "Come On" in 1963. The world's highest earning live band, their #1 hits include "The Last Time", "Get Off My Cloud" and "Honky Tonk Woman".
8. Queen were chosen by Channel 4 viewers to represent the 1970s in the 2004 Music Hall of Fame.

Answer: True

Fronted by the late Freddie Mercury, Queen are also members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One of the most popular and highly regarded bands of all time, their influence is still felt today with bands such as the Darkness.
9. The "King of Pop" Michael Jackson was the viewers choice to represent the 1980s in the Music Hall of Fame. What was Michael's first UK #1 hit single?

Answer: One Day In Your Life

Love him or loathe him, there is no denying Michael Jackson's contribution to popular music. His first solo UK hit was "Got To Be There" in 1972, with "One Day In Your Life" earning him his first #1 in May 1981. The hits just kept on coming after that!
10. Which singer was chosen to represent the 1990s in the UK's Music Hall of Fame?

Answer: Robbie Williams

Perhaps the most controversial choice for the UK's Music Hall of Fame, Robbie Williams was, of course, a former member of boyband Take That. After the success of his hit "Angels" in 1997, his popularity really took off, and his hits include "Rock DJ" and "She's The One".

The debate about who should feature in the UK's Music Hall of Fame is set to rumble for some time, and no doubt many people are asking where artists such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, The Kinks and Nirvana are. Or even Mr Blobby and Bob the Builder! At the moment, the Music Hall of Fame is only on paper, but it is hoped that sometime in the future a museum could be set up as a permanent tribute. We await the next round of inductees with interest.
