Grace spent a lot of her time wondering how the other heirs were related to her Uncle Sam. When she heard that they were all his "nieces and nephews" she was taken aback. She couldn't imagine everyone having the same connection with him as she did.

2. "I, Samuel W. Westing, hereby swear that I did not die of natural causes..." But, he was not dead. How old was Sam Westing when he actually died?

Answer: 85

While everyone was under the impression that he either lay dead on an oriental rug in his house, that he was dead when they saw his body at the reading of the will, or that he died when he was revealed to be Sandy McSouthers, no one but the winner of the game knew when his time truly came.

Sam Westing had a way of manipulating people to do what he wanted and that is what this line in the will was for. He assumed everyone would think that the game would be difficult and, as he put it, senseless.
