creating a Bith dearc. A Bith dearc is a sort of portal to the underworld. It drains the energy from those who open it and would eventually kill someone if used often. Daniel was using this to contact his wife who had passed away during Yule three months before.

Hunter and the ring he gave her. The morning after being asked to marry him, Hunter supposedly drowns during a ferry accident and, trying to clear the storm, she loses her ring to the sea.
