Fun Trivia: S : Snooker

Special Sub-Topic: The Wonderful World of Snooker

The same man held the world championship title from 1992 to 1996. What is his name?

Stephen Hendry. Actually, Stephen Hendry has won the title seven times, but only five in a row. Ray Reardon and Steve Davis both won their share of world titles in their days (six each).

The battle for the World Championship 2003 took place in an arena that is really well known - in the U.K anyway. What is it called?
The Crucible. The Crucible in Sheffield has been the place for the world champions to come together since they started broadcasting the tournament on TV back in the seventies.

What is the highest point you can score in one break (No special circumstances counted)?
    147. It's called a "maximum break". You've got to pot fifteen red, fifteen black and all the coloureds in one go. It is not that common in ranking tournaments although they get extra pay if they do it.

All the reds are worth one point each, but how much is the brown worth?
    4. Yellow 2p, green 3p, brown 4p, blue 5p, pink 6p, black 7p.

What on earth is the person in white gloves doing?
referee. His (or hers) apparent task is to put the coloured balls back on the table when they're potted, and count points. But there's more to it than it seems at first sight.

Ronnie O'Sullivan is called one of the most talented snooker players ever seen. What is his nickname?
The Rocket. Ronnie and Jimmy "Whirlwind" White, both got their nicknames because of their fast action around the table. "The Dragon" Matthew Stevens comes from Wales and the dragon is the Welsh national animal. For obvious reasons: "the Wizard" John Higgins, who comes from Wishaw.

Who won the World Championship in spring 2003?
Mark Williams. Mark Williams won the title for the second time after beating Ken Doherty with 18 frames to 16.

The players have to follow certain dress codes. At the World Championship there's an extra twist. In 2003, they still had to wear what?
a bow tie. They don't want "casual wear" at the Crucible, but I've heard talk about changing the rules. Fun fact: John Higgins always wears white socks when he plays there.

Which word is not a snooker term?
blot. The pots are the holes you're supposed to sink the balls in. A break could be described as a player's turn at the table. A frame is one lay up of the balls. You play the frame until you have too many points for your opponent to overcome, or until all the balls are potted. A match consist of a settled (odd) number of frames.

Which one of these players solely plays left handed?
Mark Williams. Mark Williams was the first left handed to win the World Championship.(Note for the pedantic: Ronnie O'Sullivan does play almost as well with his left as with his right hand, but he is right handed.)
