Fun Trivia: J : J Authors

Special Sub-Topic: Very Moomin Literature : Vol. 2

For how many months do the Moomin family hibernate?

    5. They go to sleep in November and wake up in spring. All except for Moomintroll...

What was in the mailbox when Moomintroll first woke up?
A leaf. Moomin was probably hoping for a letter from Snufkin, but found no mail at all. This is possibly because everybody knew the family would be hibernating at this time, or because most of the family's acquaintances were hibernating also.

Who says "Now you've waked me...and eaten half my sleeping-bag"?
Little My. She says this to the Squirrel With The Magnificent Tail after he steals her bedding to make a new mattress.

With what colour yarn is Moomintroll darning the family's bathing trunks with?
Red. He is mending them when Too-Ticky comes to tell him about The Great Cold.

What are the eight invisible creatures in Too-Ticky's bathing-house?
Shrews. They turned invisible because they are so shy. They can also fly.

According to the Author's Note, what has a Displaced Hedgehog had no time to pack?
Toothbrush. Little My says that she would not even give Moominmamma's eggwarmer to a Displaced Hedgehog. Another typically bizarre comment from the world of Ms Jannson.

Fill in the missing lyric from Too-Ticky's song: "Here comes the dumb, The lonely and the rum, The wild and the quiet. Thud goes the ____"
Drum & drum. Too-Ticky sings many songs in this book. This particular one is about a bonfire she has made.

What are Moomintroll's ears decorated with when he visits Too-Ticky while she is ice fishing?
Gold ribbons. She is catching fish to make soup when Moomintroll comes to tell her that the sun didn't arrive.

In the bathing-house cupboard is a "not quite airtight" rubber version of which character/creature?
A Hemulen. Moomintroll sees it when he opens the cupboard and sees the troll.

Where in Moominhouse does the Troll/Ancestor sleep?
The stove. We first discover this when Moomintroll is telling his guests not to wake his family. He also mentions it later while telling his mother not to light the stove in case The Ancestor is still in there.

What is the name of the Creep who was frightened by the mirror?
Salome & salome. There is confusion when The Hemulen asks if there are any slalom in the Moominhouse. Salome then appears to become a big fan of The Hemulen.

Who tries to make Moomintroll send The Hemulen to the Lonely Mountains?
Too-Ticky. She is unhappy that his "bugle-tooting" has stopped her musical shrew from playing its flute.

According to one of Too-Ticky's songs, where does she catch warm winds?
In her nose. Yet another bizarre lyric. Can't you just tell that these books have been translated?!

After Moomintroll, who is the next family member to wake up?
Moominmamma. She wakes up when Moomintroll is ill. The Snork is not even mentioned as being in the house, although his sister is.

What words does the book end with?
The End And The Beginning. I think this means that it is the end of the story, but the beginning of spring and new adventures.
