Fun Trivia: W : WW2 Armor

Special Sub-Topic: WW2 Tanks

The M4 Sherman became the backbone of the Allied Armies, but which earlier tank was modified to create the Sherman?

M3 Grant. Over 50,000 Shermans were built during the course of the war.

When the Germans made the Tiger, an order was given that no Tiger should fall into Allied hands, however a novice crew abandonded their Tiger. Why?
It was hit by a Churchill tank. When the four Tigers engaged the Churchills, the Allies just couldn't pentrate the Tigers armour. By pure luck one of the Churchill's shells ran down the barrel and wedged the turret. Apart from that, the tank was in perfect working order but the novice crew panicked and ran, leaving the Tiger for the Allies.

The Germans created the Panzer V "Panther" as an answer to which tank?
T34. The Tiger was the answer to the KV-1, the Panther was the answer to the T34.

When the Allies created the Churchill tank, Winston himself went to inspect it. How did he describe it?
This tank has more faults than I do. The Churchill was underpowered. It was so complicated that crews often had problems manoeuvring it. However, the Churchill had excellent hill climbing capabilities, which was why it was kept in use until the end of the war.

Which tank was the only one to be used throughout the whole of WW2?
Matilda. The Matilda was first used as an infantry tank, however when the big tanks came it was used as a multi-purpose tank, carrying brigdes and using flamethrowers. It was perfect for this due to its thick armour.

The German Maus Super Heavy Tank was built at the end of the war. Its primary weapon was a either a 135mm or a 150mm gun, but what was its secondary weapon?
75mm gun. Only two Maus Super heavy tanks where made during the war. It weighed a massive 188 tons.

Allied commanders calculated it required a particular number of Shermans to destroy one Tiger tank. How many?
    4. The first 3 Shermans would charge forward when fired upon, the tiger had a very slowing turning turret so the forth could strike at point blank range from behind the Tiger.

The Panzer VI Tiger weighed how much?
56,900 kg. A huge tank, the Tiger could tear apart an entire armoured division in a small group, however it was very unreliable.

What feature of the T34 made it invunerable to almost all types of German AT guns?
Sloped armour plates. The sloped armour deflected most of the energy from the shells away from the tank meaning the early german tanks had no chance.

The JS3 had a wedge shaped front to increase protection and stability
    f. The Russians made tanks with sloped armour which increased protection, but the 88mm gun was still able to penitrate the armour. So the Russians made a wedge shaped to further increase protection. But this did not effect the tanks stability in any way
