    Djoser. The Step Pyramid of Djoser was built during the reign of the third Dynasty (ca. 2800 B.C.) in Saqqara, Egypt. It was the first pyramid in the history of architecture. Its creator was an architect named Imhotep.

Who was the first emperor of ancient Rome?
    Augustus. His real name was Gaius Octavianus (Octavian). He was the great-nephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar. Augustus was a title of honor granted to him in 27 B.C. by the senate.

Who was the first world champion in chess?
    Wilhelm Steinitz. Wilhelm Steinitz, of Austrian origin, became the first official world champion in chess in 1886, after defeating Johannes Zukertort. In 1894, he lost the world championship to Emanuel Lasker.

    James Connolly. James Connolly (USA) won the triple jump on 6 April 1896, in Athens, and thus became the first Olympic champion since the ancient games.

    Roald Amundsen. Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, beat the British explorer Robert F. Scott in the race to be the first to reach the South Pole in 1911.

    Yuri Gagarin. Gagarin, a Russian astronaut, was the first in history to be rocketed into orbital space flight on April 12, 1961.

Who was the first woman athlete to earn $100,000 in one year?
    Billie Jean King. Billie Jean King was a women's rights pioneer. She won a record twenty Wimbledon titles, including six singles titles. King beat 55-year-old Bobby Riggs in a match nicknamed "Battle of the Sexes" in 1973.

Who was the first European woman to climb Mount Everest?
    Wanda Rutkiewicz. Wanda Rutkiewicz, from Poland, was one of the greatest woman-climbers ever. She was the first woman from Europe and the third woman in the world to climb Everest, in 1978. She died while climbing Kangchenjunga in 1992.
