Fun Trivia: A : Australia

Special Sub-Topic: You've Really Got Me Now

What is Matthew Burke's middle name?

Colman. Matthew Burke is the man who got me caught up in the wonderful game of Rugby Union. Initially I had no idea what Rugby Union was. (I thought all football was Rugby League) I watched a game as an excuse to stay up late.

Which country won the 1991 World Cup?
Australia. The first World Cup was won in 1987 by the New Zealand All Blacks. South Africa won the 1995 World Cup, and their victory was followed by a very moving speech by Nelson Mandela.

Who was the captain of the 1999 World Cup winning team?
John Eales. Australia won the 1999 World Cup. George Gregan was the 2002 captain of the Wallabies. David Wilson was a one time vice captain to John Eales' Captain, and Francois Pienaar used to be the captain of the Springboks (South Africa).

Before it became the Super 14 competition (held between New Zealand, South Africa and Australia), Australia had these teams representing them in the Super 12 competition: Queensland Reds, NSW Waratahs and _____________ ?
ACT Brumbies. Interestingly enough, the ACT Brumbies was originally made up of players 'rejected' from the Queensland and NSW teams, along with a few, as then unknown, ACT players. They immediately ploughed past both the Reds and the Waratahs in their first ever entrance to the Super 12, and has had a fairy tale run ever since, producing some of our finest national players, i.e. Stephen Larkham.

Stephen Larkham, Australia's five-eighth and a legend in his own right: what is his nickname?
Bernie. Yes his nickname is Bernie, so kindly bestowed upon him by his team mates. He was given this name in reference to the movie, 'Weekend at Bernie's', which is basically about some guys having to pretend a corpse is alive for a weekend to avoid getting in trouble. So what does that have to do with Larkham? Well, his mates reckon he talks about as much as a corpse. Nice, guys.

The Wallabies once defeated England 76-0?
true. This was the first international match of the 1997 season, and England was by all accounts represented by an understrength team with many rookies. One of these rookies however was the now famous Johnny Wilkinson, who only extremely rarely misses a kick at goal.

How many tests did David Campese represent the Wallabies in? (tests meaning international matches)
    101. David Campese played his hundredth match against his country of birth, Italy, making only the second rugby union player ever to have represented his country one hundred times. The first was frenchmen Phillipe Sella, who finished his career on a grand total of 113 test matches. David Campese made a much more low key entrance in a game against Wales on the same tour, bringing his grand total to 101.

What is the name of David Campese's signature move, which has since been appropriated by many players?
Goose Step & goosestep & Goose. David Campese once said that 'his head didn't always know where his feet were taking him'.

Which of the following pairs have been best mates since they were just little fellas?
Tim Horan and Jason Little. Tim Horan and Jason Little were both credited as being tremendous rugby players during their hey day, and throughout it all have always been the best of mates. I'm not sure if Jason played quite so many pranks as Tim did though.

Who is famous for that tackle on Jeff Wilson? (If you know anything about Rugby Union then that's all the information you need.)
George Gregan. Yup, little Georgie Gregan came out of nowhere to prevent what seemed a certain try by Wilson in a memorable moment that has been dubbed, 'the tackle that won the Bledisloe Cup' Go George!
