Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is "the Network?"

Answer: Modesty's criminal organization which she ran in her 20s

When Henri Louche and his second-in-command are killed, Modesty takes over the remnants of his small gang in Tangier and builds it into an international criminal organization, called "the Network." "The Network" is a clean criminal organization, eschewing vice and drugs, specializing in industrial espionage and high-end theft. Modesty breaks up "the Network" among various lieutenants and retires, along with Willie, to England when she has made half a million pounds sterling at the age of 26.
2. Who is "Jacqueline?"

Answer: A code word that Modesty and Willie use to signal danger

"Jacqueline" is a code word that Modesty and Willie use to indicate danger. For example, in "Modesty Blaise", when Modesty is being held prisoner, she tells Willie over the phone, that she has "Jacqueline" with her.
3. What is "the Nailer?"

Answer: Modesty takes off her top to distract opponents in combat

"The nailer" requires that Modesty strip to the waist before going into a room occupied by enemies. This gives her a two second advantage in combat as the men are distracted by the sight of her breasts.
4. What is "kongo?"

Answer: A wooden dumbbell used to strike nerve centers

The kongo is a small wooden dumbbell. The shaft is held in the palm of the hand and two knobs protrude from either side of a clenched fist. It is used to strike nerve centers to paralyze, knock out or kill an opponent in combat. It is a favorite weapon of Modesty's, originally presented to her by Willie early in his "Network" days.

She often carries a kongo bound up in her hair, in a special pocket in slacks, or disguised as the clasp of a handbag.
5. What is "the Object?"

Answer: Code for the Pahlavi crown sought by villains in "The Xanadu Talisman"

The Pahlavi crown is stolen from El Mico's organization by Bernard Martel, who intends to use it in trade for his wife, who is in the harem at Xanadu. When he is killed while under Modesty's protection, she takes over the rescue of his wife.
6. What is "the Treadmill?"

Answer: The pub that Willie bought when he moved back to England

After retiring from the Network, both Willie and Modesty moved to England. Willie bought "The Treadmill," intending to start a new life as a publican. Although he lives on the floor above, and has a building out back that is used for combat training and target practice, Willie leaves the running of the pub to his manager, Mr. Spurling.
7. Who is "Ozymandias?"

Answer: A gorilla kept by Brunel on his African estate in "The Impossible Virgin"

Brunel keeps Ozymandias as a symbol of mind over matter. After Brunel is assassinated, Adrian Chance puts Modesty and Giles Pennyfeather in the cage with Ozymandias. As often happens in complicated villainous plans, Chance is called away. Giles and Modesty then trick the gorilla into bending a bar of the cage sufficiently for them to squeeze out.
8. Who is "Lucifer?"

Answer: A psychically gifted but mad young man who sometimes helps Modesty locate people.

Although Lucifer's precognitive talent lies behind the blackmail and murder scheme, it is Seff who is the mastermind. After Seff's organization is destroyed, Lucifer is rescued by Modesty and eventually taken to America under John Dall's protection. He is installed in a sanatorium there. Modesty and Steve both visit him in later adventures to find out if someone is dead or alive, as this is Lucifer's area of precognitive talent. ("Last Day in Limbo" and "Dead Man's Handle")
9. Who is "The Silver Mistress?"

Answer: Modesty herself, as seen by Sir Gerald, when she fights the Golden Master

Fleeing the chateau Lancieux, Willie takes Quinn and Janice out a cellar window, while Modesty goes out through the caves beneath the chateau with Sir Gerald. Knowing that they are pursued by Sexton, she strips, has Sir Gerald grease her body, and sends him across a small underground lake, while she stands in mute challenge to Sexton.

The grease provides insulation against the cold and makes it difficult for Sexton to hold on to her in combat. Sir Gerald beholds her as the silver mistress as she waits for Sexton.
10. What clue does a Bruguet watch provide to Modesty?

Answer: That Danny Chavasse may still be alive.

Modesty gave the Bruguet watch to Danny when he retired from "the Network." Danny supposedly perished when Paxero's yacht was lost at sea. Some three years later, Modesty, on unrelated business, finds the watch at Paxero's Swiss villa. Feeling sure that Danny would not have sold or lost the watch, she goes first to Lucifer to ask if Danny is on the "upper levels" and then to Dinah, who divines his location at the secret plantation of Limbo, worked by millionaire slaves, all kidnapped and presumed dead.

Naturally, she rescues him and the other slaves in another improbable adventure, "Last Day in Limbo."
