Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A behavioural psychologist would probably say which of these?

Answer: we act based on rewards and punishments received.

Ivan Pavlov and John Watson were two of the first behavioural psychologists. Introspection was part of an early form of psychology called Functionalism, and the unconscious was a main part of Sigmund Freud's work.
2. A sample of 50 school-aged children are given either a pill with a certain medication in it, or a placebo. Before starting the experiment, and then after taking the pills for two weeks, the children fill out a survey about their energy level. The dependent variable is

Answer: the children's energy level.

The dependent variable is what is measured in the experiment. The independent variable is what affects the dependent variable, in this case the pill with medication in it. The placebo is the pill without medication in it.
3. These research techniques are all descriptive:

Answer: Case study, observation, standardized test.

Descriptive techniques observe and record behaviour. Case study, observation, standardized tests, surveys, and interviews are all descriptive. Experiments manipulate the environment to test for changes in behaviour, and a double-blind is a type of experiment. Correlational research describes the relationship between variables using statistics.
4. True or false: The forebrain includes the thalamus, cerebrum, and cerebellum.

Answer: False

The cerebellum is a part of the hindbrain, next to the medulla or brainstem.
5. According to Diana Baumrind (1991), in order to be classified as an authoritarian parent, you would have

Answer: a high level of control, and a low level of warmth.

The other three types of parenting are permissive (low control, high warmth), authoritative (both high), and neglecting (both low).
6. A child is playing with a toy. When you hide the toy, she makes no effort to look for it. According to Jean Piaget, the child is in which stage of cognition?

Answer: Sensorimotor

The sensorimotor stage usually lasts from birth to age two. The idea of object permanency develops in the Preoperational stage, when a child understands that something can still exist even if she cannot see it.
7. If you were looking for an employee who could find minute differences between small objects, ideally he would have

Answer: a low difference threshold.

A difference threshold is the smallest difference in stimulation needed for someone to notice a difference between two stimuli fifty percent of the time. A lower difference threshold means that it takes less of a change from one to the other for him to catch the difference.
8. If you are in an altered state of consciousness, which of the following are you probably doing?

Answer: Drinking alcohol to excess

Drugs, trauma, and fatigue can also cause altered states of consciousness. A high level of consciousness is required for focusing tasks. When you are asleep, you are in a subconscious level of awareness.
9. The method of Classical Conditioning begins with

Answer: the unconditioned stimulus and response.

It goes: unconditioned stimulus and response (US and UR); US, UR, and conditioned stimulus (CS); then CS and conditioned response. This was developed by Pavlov, when he taught dogs to salivate (CR) to the ringing of a bell (CS).
10. True or False: According to Atkinson and Shiffren, when your mind is processing information for your memory, sensory input travels from the working store, to the sensory store, to the long-term store.

Answer: False

Information from the senses travel from the sensory store, to the working, or short-term store, and finally to the long-term store.

This is a sampling of what we have learned in the first half of my Intro to Psychology Class! I hope you enjoyed it!
