Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Almost everybody remembers who finished second to Johnny Chan in 1988, thanks, in no small part, to the movie "Rounders". Which player did Chan defeat heads-up in 1987 to win his first Main Event title?

Answer: Frank Henderson

In 1989 Henderson won a bracelet in Pot Limit Omaha.
2. Johnny Moss Defeated which player in heads-up play to win the 1970 title?

Answer: None of these are correct

1970 was the only year the title was decided by a vote, after several days of poker.

The rumor is that every player was asked to vote for the best player. Of course this resulted in a 7-way tie, as each player voted for himself. When a second ballot was cast, the players were asked to vote for the second best player. Moss prevailed.
3. Who finished second to Dan Harrington in 1995?

Answer: Howard Goldfarb

Howard Goldfarb was an amateur player, but didn't seem rattled at all in heads up play. As he smoked and ate at the table, it almost seemed as if the poker match was secondary.
4. Who finished second to Chris Moneymaker in 2003?

Answer: Sammy Farha

David Williams finished second to Raymer the next year. Dan Harrington was actually the third place finisher at this, the final table.
5. Stu Ungar won his first WSOP title in 1980. Whom did he defeat heads-up for the bracelet?

Answer: Doyle Brunson

In 1997 Ungar became the first person to win the Main Event 3 times since it became a freeze-out tournament. Had Doyle won the 1980 event, he would have been the first to accomplish this feat.
6. In 1998, using a bold piece of reverse psychology, Scotty Nguyen uttered the now infamous phrase "You call this one and it's all over, baby!" (All this while swilling beer at the same time!) Playing the board, his opponent did call, and lost the hand and the Main Event. Who was Scotty's opponent?

Answer: Kevin McBride

Earlier in the heads-up competition, McBride pushed all-in, and excused himself to use the restroom, making it impossible for Nguyen to get a read on him. Nguyen did make the call, and lost the hand.
7. Johnny Moss, Doyle Brunson, Stu Ungar, and Johnny Chan were the first four players to win the Main Event multiple times. Of these four, how many also have second place finishes in the Main Event?

Answer: 3

Stu Ungar is the only player of this group who never lost heads-up in the Main Event, and he never will, as he has since passed on.

Doyle finished second to Stu Ungar in 1980.
Moss finished second to Puggy Pearson in 1973.
Chan finished second to Phil Hellmuth in 1989.
8. Who finished second in 1985 and 2000?

Answer: TJ Cloutier

Cloutier finished second to Ferguson in 2000 and Smith in 1985.
Dewey Tomko Finished second in 1982 and 2001 to Jack Strauss and Juan Carlos Mortenson, respectively.
9. The following players all have multiple second place finishes. Which one of them also won the Main Event in 1973?

Answer: Puggy Pearson

Pearson finished second in 1971 and 1972.
Tomko finished second in 1982 and 2001.
Addington finished second in 1974 and 1978.
Cloutier finished second in 1985 and 2000.
10. Of the following names, who did NOT finish second in the Main Event in 2004, 2005, or 2006?

Answer: Chadler Cowles

That's because Chadler is my name, and I am just the author of this quiz! (I just HAD to find a creative way to make myself the answer to a WSOP question!)

Williams finished second to Raymer in 2004.
Dannenmann finished second to Hachem in 2005.
Wasicka finished second to Gold in 2006.
