Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nabby Adams, a British Colonial policman, inherited a rather mangy but loving dog from his predecessor. What was the loveable creature's name?

Answer: Cough

As we have heard, this dog was inherited. The dog was so called as it always used to get under its previous master's feet, prompting him to scold it with what sounded like the expression " 'coff"
2. Victor Crabbe's headmaster at the school was a "paunchy sportsman with a taste for whiskey-water and fast cars, who subscribed to a popular book-club". What was his name?

Answer: Boothby

Boothby had a third class degree from Durham University and although giving the pretence of being cultured, he welcomed guests to tiffin with the greeting "Take a pew". He was also somewhat of a dictator.

Gillespie was a former headmaster who was considered too harsh for the school.

Roberts had "gone troppo", adapting too well to local customs, and was even seen once wearing a sarong to work.

Ponsonby did not exist but may have been one of the pederasts mentioned in the book.
3. Victor walked in the Malayan heat each day from his house to the school. Why did he not drive like the rest of the expatriates in the town?

Answer: He had a morbid fear of driving

Victor had been responsible for the death of his first wife in England. Whilst driving recklessly on icy roads he had crashed into a river and she had drowned. Since then he could not drive.
4. Victor and Fenella's Houseboy or servant, Ibrahim, was which of these?

Answer: A married but effeminate man who preferred the company of men

Ibahim had been forced to marry by his mother in the hope that it would cure him of his problem. He was in constant fear that his wife, whom he had abandoned, would find out where he was living.
5. Hamidin, a boy in Victor's class, was expelled for, allegedly, being found in the houseboy's room with a woman. How did the other pupils in the school protest this action?

Answer: On the school sports day the senior students refused to participate in the events

Only the juniors took part in the events and so, as the headmaster, Boothby, eloquently put it, "...all we had was the egg and spoon race and the sack race and the bloody hop, step and jump". Boothby believed that Victor was to blame for the boycott and accused him of being a communist.
6. Fenella was quite often very depressed with living in Malaysia. She felt that if they had a car then she could get out a little and see more of life and the country. On hearing this Nabby devised a plan to help the Crabbes and make some money himself by selling them Rivers' car as Rivers would soon be returning to England. What sort of car was it?

Answer: A '52 Abelard

Victor agreed to buy the car but as Fenella did not know how to drive and he was afraid of driving it was agreed that Nabby's colleague Alladad Khan would drive for the Crabbes when he was off duty. As Alladad was enamored of Fenella, and Nabby could see free drink in the arrangement, it meant that the Crabbes now had quite frequent house guests.
7. During this time Victor was having an affair with a local divorcee called Rahimah. Rahimah worked in a seedy club called the Paradise Cabaret and had a young son. What was the son called?

Answer: Mat

After Victor had ended his affair Rahimah paid Ibrahim, the Crabbe's houseboy to put a potion in Victor's drink so that he would return to her.
8. Alladad Khan was always under threat from his wife Fatimah Bibi that if he did anything wrong she would have him transferred to her brother's police division. Her brother, Abdul Khan, was a Commanding of a division and a very upright Muslim and defender of the Khan name. How did Abdul Khan blot his copybook and allow Alladad to gain the upper hand in his own household?

Answer: He married a Chinese Christian in a registry office in Singapore

Alladad was forever borrowing money from Fatimah's hidden stash to pay for the lifestyle that he and Nabby led. After the wedding of Abdul to a Chinese infidel Fatimah had nothing left to threaten him with.
9. Nabby was forever in debt to "Towkays" or shop owners for his prodigious consumption of beer. His only hope of winning it back was to win the lottery. One day he was desperately in need of a beer and had no money. A certain Towkay agreed to give him a small bottle of Tiger beer in return for the unchecked lottery ticket. What was the Towkay's name?

Answer: Guan Moh Chan

Guan Moh Chan recognized that the ticket was the winner and refused to return the ticket until Nabby threatened to smash up his shop. Nabby only owed Guan $200 (ringgit) but owed Lim $470, Chee $276 and Wun $128.
10. After winning the Lottery, Nabby decided to return to Bombay where he had previously been stationed. As the Crabbes had been so kind to him and had also looked after the winning ticket for him, he decided to give them a present. What was the present?

Answer: 10% of the winnings, or $35,000

Nabby was going to return to Bombay to retire. Victor warned him that Prohibition was in force in India and that he would not be able to get a drink. Nabby then proudly showed him a letter from a doctor stating that he is "a confirmed alcoholic and may be served with intoxicating liquors in any hotel where he requests them".
